Happy 1st henniversary ex-batts

Recommended Posts

Thank you so much!

We're so pleased with them; they're our very first batch of ex-batts (is there a nicer word than batch?) and we'll definitely be rehoming more retirees in the future. I don't think their hybrid sisters were quite so delighted when they arrived but they're one big happy (mostly) family now though.

They look lovely! I am new to keeping chickens and picked up my 3 ex batts 2 weeks ago,I have to admit I found it hard at first, I wasn't prepared for the pecking that went on, but I received some good advice and encouragement on this site and feel a lot happier now. They are a bit bald but I can see an improvement already, looking at your photo and how they will eventually look made me realise I have made the right decision taking them on. I'm sure it will be a very rewarding experience.

Thanks so much for all your kind comments chaps!

We were very, very nervous getting our first ex-batt girls and put it off for a couple of years before finally taking the plunge with these cherubs from Fresh Start for Hens last April. Luckily they didn't seem too bald when we picked them up though thinking back now they really were quite sad and ratty; but they were really, really thin and greasy and so smelly. Although they were very nervous and timid for the first few days the first time we let them out with our posh girls (regular hybrids) they kicked off big time and pecked lumps out of them. And we were worried that they'd be the ones to get bullied - feisty girls ex-batts! It took a long while for things to properly settle down but it has really been worth it to see them have their first sun bathe and dust bath - and the bigs flaps of their wings which they still seem to get a big kick out of every morning. Flopsy even does the purring thing now when she's chilling out.

Fingers crossed for a few more years of happy retirement for them - and keep at it Chateau Eglu, you're doing a great thing and your girls will have their own big fluffy bums in no time!
