Whats the best? (breeds)

Recommended Posts

Now that i'm down to only two ex-batts left i'm going to get some chooks from my local hen hotel (The cosy hen company). I want hens that will get on with my ex-batts and are fairly quiet (neighbours) and friendly GNR . They have the following on sale;

Salmon Faverolles

French Copper Marans

French Wheaten Marans

Barred Plymouth Rock

Welsummers

Buff Orpington

Black Orpington

Any suggestions??

Hi, we have a salmon fav & she is lovely. She is docile, content & happy. I've never known her to be cross. She loves all the others & at night spreads her wings for them all. It's lovely to see. She is also hardy & tolerates our vile winters well. She is almost 3yrs old and still lays although her laying season is fairly short. I think her nature is typical of her breed. Alli x

I introduced three orpingtons to my hybrid girls. The Orps are so lovely, friendly and placid. However they did get bullied by two of my hybrids until they sorted everything out. There is only one hen below them in the pecking order by they don't go for her at all. I love their characters.

Honestly I don't think you can ever know how intros will go and I think its more down to individual hens than particular breeds per se.

Did you say how many you want? From that list, if it was me, I'd get three. Top of the list a Faverolle for the gentle factor and the pretty factor and the cuddle factor, then a Marans for the lovely egg colour and I also suspect they would hold their own well with established ex bats, and lastly an Orp as they are such sweeties (but not sure how they would do with hybrid ex bats and you might find their tendency to broodyness a bit of a trial). I don't know much about Plymouth Rocks or Welsummers.

Hi there I'm new to hens

We've had ours for a month :D

Our copper/maran cuiver is the top chick we love her but she thinks she's a cockerel

She pushy and fiesty :!:

However our Bared Plymouth Rock is the sweetest most inquisitive tame hen :D she has a lovely temperament

Our Sussex light on the other hand is flighty and even though she is much lager than the other two

she is the most "bird-like" and shy...

ou kids picked them for their looks and colour

We enjoy them all BUT I am tempted to get two bantam orps too!

Hiya,

So my remaining ex-batts are ok - worm and coccidia test was negative!

I have contacted my local breeder and due to their chickens being so popular at the moment they are being reserved before hatching!

So because of this they wont have any hens for me until July :(

but will have a Black Plymouth Rock, a Light Sussex and maybe a Buff Sussex.

Any advice on these breeds and their suitability to my garden and WIR?

Thanks

Another vote for a Light Sussex here. We've just lost our lovely Dorcus - she was beautiful, stately and friendly, a fantastic layer and would sort out any fights and disputes amongst the others even though she wasn't the top hen. I'd have another one just like her if I could.

I have 2 light sussex and are total oppisite to each other,Mayo is really tame and calm and lays every day (apart from when broody) and Nugget is a total scatter brain and runs away from everything including me and I have had them over a year and lays whenever she feels like it,but they are a big bird even compared to my bluebelles which I thought were big.

I have a Suffolk Noir the wonderful Marigold and I adore that chicken. I described her tonight as a big feathered bundle of happiness. When, and I can't even think about it, she goes to the big hen house in the sky, would I have another Suffolk Noir? No, because it wouldn't be her. I think they are all individuals and a lot of it is down to luck
