Picking up my hens on sat. :)

Recommended Posts

Don't worry, they won't be expecting a jacuzzi or entertainment system...after all you will be their entertainment running around after them and looking after their every whim :lol:

Seriously that sounds fine. If you put some newspaper under the roosting bars it will make cleaning it out easier too. Have fun once you've picked them up. They are such a joy :D

We got our very first chooks last Saturday, and so far so good! You are going to love every minute of this :D

I think I was very lucky, but Josie laid her first egg on Sunday morning and has continued to give us one every day, Tilly produced a very small, but lovely, egg yesterday.

Some worries about the torrential rain, their lovely wood-chip is sodden and trodden. Another cover is on order from Omlet and in the meantime a bin-bag and some duck tape is doing its duty.

Earlier today we let them out for their first stroll around the garden and I was delighted to see them happily rootling about in the mulch under my shrubs. Despite my nerves no escape bids and no trouble enticing them back home.

I have found the way to provoke unseemly and noisy squabbling: offer one fat slug for the girls to share. I had to go and raid the compost bins for one each and even then they each decided that the other's slug was more desirable than their own :D

Good luck with your new girls, and my thanks to everyone here who has reassured me and offered good advice!

Congratulations chickenjulia and Jenthelibrarian on getting new chooks. It is such an exciting time isn't it?:dance:

Don't worry about the house not looking all that cosy. When not laying their eggs the chooks (being birds not fluffy mammals) should use the perch for snoozing (Put non technically, something in their brains clicks to stop them falling off). Remember that birds in the wild only build nests for raising their families not for comfy feelings all year round unlike most other pets that we have such as buns, hammies or dogs. All the same some naughty chooks do quite like taking a nap in the nesting box and sometimes have to be pushed to use the roosting bars
