buying a kindle as a gift?

Recommended Posts

A colleague is retiring this week and as he is a very avid reader my boss has asked me to look at getting him a kindle as a leaving present, plus he would like me to put some classics on it. However Its been ages since I got mine and mine is very easy (3G version) so divvy me cant remember basic questions

Can you buy a kindle as a gift (isn't it linked to your email account)?

Do you have to have computer access/ email account and some tech knowledge as I am not sure the recipient has a computer let alone an email account; so does that mean he wouldnt be able to use it?

Those questions alone may rule it out but if not I may be back with more questions so thanks in advance

I got one for my sister for Christmas, which wasn't linked to me 8) My local Tesco sell them. You have to have access to a computer to be able to load books onto it from what I understand. I think you can get ones with wifi but would prob still need an email address, Amazon account. Am sure somebody who is more knowledgeable will be along soon

There is an option to buy it as a gift on the amazon website so it doesn't get linked to your account, or if it does you can transfer it once you've set it up - I did this for my Dad as I put some books on it to get him started.

From what I know there are some that work on wifi but that means you need to have an internet connection in the first place. The 3G ones (the more expensive one) you don't need to have internet access. On all of them you can access the amazon store from the kindle and download books that way.

My Dad is a bit of a techno phobe and he is now permanently attached to his!

The Kindle 3G can be used as a stand alone - you don't need to be able to hook up to a PC or laptop at all. You don't with the regular Kindle either, as long as you have Wi-Fi.

And yes, you can buy as a gift - it is very easy to link it to yourself once you start it up.

What a fantastic leaving present! I'm sure he would be delighted with it! (and if not, he can flog it  )

Thanks for all your answers and help.

Thinking about it though he would need some computer or internet access and I cant see that he would have that. I had forgotten just how techno phobic he is; when he got a mobile phone I was the first entry in his contacts and he would often ring me accidently or send me blank texts including one day he managed to send me 76, YES 76, blank texts

Such a shame as I agree its a fab idea
