Short video of Kevin enjoying some salad

Kevin is our 40+ year old tortoise who is loving this weather. This is him tucking into some salad leaves (video should work if you click on the photo). You can hear the girls who are very wary of him in the background. They are very respectful of him and dare not steal any of his food - unlike Scally (the dog) who pinches his cucumber despite really not liking it  Oh, and my finger makes a guest appearance in the top left hand corner

Wow, he's hungry, isn't he!!! 8)

I'd love a tortoise, don't know why, but they do seem very sweet!

Me too, they arn't exactly pretty or cuddly but there is something about them!

I embarrassingly now, remember having one as a child, when they were bringing hundreds of them in and they were all dying and no-one knew how to care for them. He ran away

I think that is what puts me off having one again

Aww :D

Think Hughie is 9 now, goes out in a run on the lawn when its sunny but if you just put him out he'll potter up to see the chickens and just get lost

He's best friends with Sherlock the rabbit when they're in the house

Lovely to see Kevin digging into his tucker :D Our poor tortie woke up from hibernation with a nasty eye infection this year :( Two lots of eye drops and a course of antibiotics later and there was no improvement, he has now lost his sight in that eye.

However...in this recent spell of hot weather, his eye suddenly appears to have cleared and we think he may even be getting some sight back. Now I know tortoises have slow metabolisms, but it would appear that the antibiotic injections have been sitting in his legs (where he was injected) for the last 6 weeks or so waiting for a spell of hot weather to get it coursing through his system! We're going to ask the vet if it's worth giving him another course of antibiotics or eye drops to make sure the infection is zapped.

Poor old chap, it is good that things sound like they are improving though :D I think that it is entirely possible that the first course didn't work so well because of the lower temperatures and inactivity. We always wait with baited breath to see how well Kev comes out of hibernation. There is such a feeling of responsibility with such an old pet

Tortoises are great! We don't know how old our Enzo is as he came to us as a rescue. We think about 20 based on size and weight, but there's no accurate way to tell. His favourite is dandelion heads and anything yellow. They are the original solar powered animal and are amazingly strong. He moves furniture around when indoors if it's in his way. He certainly lives up to his name when it's hot out. For some reason, watching a tortoise walk from behind looks to me like a baby in a nappy crawling away!
