2 hens dead in 2 days...Bumblefoot hen dead

Recommended Posts

My barred Plymouth Rock hen, Sarah, was put to sleep today after a rather dragged-out battle with chronic bumblefoot. http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=87632 This was the hen I had mentioned several times on the forum in the past year or so. When I went to let her out in the morning, her neck was very weak (she was barely able to support her head) and her face and eyes had swollen to an extent. I decided that the best thing for her was to put her down, as she was obviously in pain.

She was quite a lucky hen throughout her life. Escaping Pneumonia, a violent meeting with a fox, and most recently, being attacked by a dog, but she couldn't escape this sickness.

I am rather disappointed after losing 2 hens in 2 days (Sabina, my bluebell hen, died of sour crop yesterday), but I suppose that it was going to happen anyway. Better for her to die in my care, as she would have been travelling down to the grandparent's next week to be looked after while I went on holidays. If the hen died while in the care of them, they would never forgive themselves.

RIP Sarah, died 30 June 2012

RIP Sabina, died 29 June 2012

Sorry to hear about your ladies. Unfortunately it was probably the kindest thing to do for Sarah as she had obviously been suffering over a long period of time. Always sad when the 'final' decision has to be made. ((hugs)) at least she is out of pain now :(
