Vaccinating chicks or not ?

Recommended Posts

When I got my chicks yesterday, the man said they had all been vaccinated. So now I have 2 vaccinated chicks and 2 not vaccinated chicks. I'm not sure what they have been vaccinated against but he said it was easy to do because you just put the stuff in their water. Should I get whatever it is to give to my 2 older unvaccinated chicks and poss my older 2 wyandottes ?

After what I've been through with Heidi and the sudden loss of Penny, I really want to be doing the right thing for them all.

Hi Luvachicken

Im brand new to chicken keeping, so im afraid im not that informative, but im really enjoying learning :D

All I can do is to list below what "I think" (somebody might correct me) is a typical vaccination programme for Hybrid/Commercial Hens. Its very intensive, so you might want to print it off and show it to the man who sold your chicks to you, so see if he can offer you any advice, but I think these vaccinations only come in huge doses and would be very expensive!

Personally, if it were me I don't think I would worry too much, unless wild birds were coming into contact with your bird's feeders and drinkers, or your birds were coming into contact with the droppings of wild birds ... I would be more concerned about keeping Mites and Worms under control and making sure that I was keeping everything nice and clean :)

Here is the vaccination list ..

I didnt realise things were like that either :o)

Its only because I bought 4 hybrid girls that I found out about vaccinations, as the list I posted to you was included in the information sheets the breeder gave me, which led me to look further into the subject.

From what I can gather most purebreed chicks that are purchased for the backyard are not vaccinated, but again someone might correct me on that :o)

Pure breeds aren't often fully vaccinated but a few places do it. Pure breeds such as silkies and saplepoots are sometimes just vaccinated against mareks as they are prone to it but vaccinations aren't really needed in pure breeds as they are kept in small groups unlike hybrids. Commercial hybrids are always fully vaccinated as they are hatched in thousands and with all those birds close together disease is more likely.

Hi I breed pure breed hens on a small scale and it is a debatable subject whether to vaccinate small amounts of chicks. I vaccinate against Mareks disease as it is something that is becoming more prevalent in back yard flocks. I administer the mareks by injection. I have discussed this at length with my vet. It has to be administered when the chicks are a day old. The other thing that I immunise against is coccicidiosis which again has to be administered within a couple of days old. This I administer by spraying the chicks with a fine mist. So you would not be able to immunise your older hens, they will have a certain amount of their own immunity by now.

The other thing to be aware of is that it is not a good idea to mix vaccinated and unvaccinated chicks initially, as the breeder may have used a live vaccine which can be shed from the vaccinated chicks and then infect the unvaccinated chicks. It really is quite a complex topic which is under much debate. Unfortunately the person you bought your hens from has not given you much information. I hope this helps.

probably around 99% of pure breeds arent vaccinated, they just arent kept in the conditions or huge scales of hybrids. Most pure breed breeders strive towards a naturally resistant flock

If your chicks are hybrids they will likely have had the list of vaccinations on the post above

If they are pure breeds I would be surrised if they are vaccinated against much if anything, if the seller bred them they should be able to tell you what the vaccinations were

Coxoid is useful in the water of chicks and so it could be as simple as that was given as a 'vaccination'

The vaccinations cannot be given to your existing birds now

If its any consolation I very much doubt that vaccination would have helped your birds as they didnt present classic symptoms of commonly vaccinated diseases

There is some debate about mixing vaccinated and unvaccinated birds but plenty of people do with no problems

personally I dont think that vaccination has any place in small scale chicken keeping

Thank you Redwing.

Even the vet for Heidi asked me if she'd been vaccinated and I did explain that I thought it was only hybrids that got vaccinated but she just kind of looked at me.

At least you have put my mind at rest about Heidi and Penny. I suppose it was just one of those things.

I think I will ring Rokers tomorrow and ask exactly what it was that these ones have been vaccinated with.
