Painting bathroom tiles?

Recommended Posts

As mentioned they will always look painted as the grout also gets painted.

When we bought my house, behind our Rayburn was tiled plain cream tiles with a wild bird mural down the middle. Not my taste at all. I bought transfers and have put them over the bird picture. It probably doesnt look like original tiles and looks like transfers. However in my opinion it looks a lot better than a bird mural and its something I can live with until we do the kitchen.

Don't take them off, tile over them. If you take the m off you will need to do a lot of repairs and a lot of work to get the walls even.

How well does tiling over tiles work, because we have a fully tiled bathroom dating back tom the mid 80's and it desperately need redoing, OH wants to tile over, but I thought that the tiles wouldn't stick properly? A few neighbours have had their's done though and have had to replace some of the plasterboard after taking the old tiles down, so i am torn. OH wants to do the bathroom ourselves.

I seem to remember that the professionally recommended course of action is to tile over. You cactualy then have a good base to work from.

You could always ask a tiler to come and quote and see what his recommended course of action would be.

My MIL painted the tiles in her bathroom about 10 years ago, they quite quickly looked shabby & the paint started bubbling & peeling off where any bathroom cleaner touched it.

When I had a handy man in earlier this year putting in our ensuite, I was asking him the best thing to do with our bathroom. It's fully tiled, bottom half is black tile, top half is white marbly tiles. Looks nice but I think it looks quite dark in there. He recommended tiling over them all.

Tiling over tiles can certainly be done, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it. The main reason is that you're relying on the tile adhesive under the original tiles being in sound condition, since it's about to have to support twice the weight of tiles it was doing before. And if, subsequently, any of the original tiles do come loose, fixing two layers is rather more significant than just one.

Let's not forget, too, that a tradesperson's recommendation is not purely based on quality; if they can avoid any time-consuming preparatory work, it makes the job more cost effective to take on. I'm not suggesting any of the tradespeople mentioned here have been cutting corners, but their approach may not necessarily be what you'd choose if you were doing the work yourself.

We moved into this house when it was just 4 months old so everything was new - unfortunately the bathroom was fully tiled - top half beige which I could live with - bottom half a very orangey terracotta coloured tile. I had to paint the orange ones! I can't say I like the tile paint but anything was better than orange! They stayed painted for about a year until we covered the that part of the room with T&G panelling.

I also hated the kitchen tiles and so I tiled over them - as long as the base is sound then it works really well and I've never had a problem with doing it - tiling was always my job when I used to work with my Ex as a plumber.
