missusmac
I received three teenage bantams at the start of half term from my aunt who had hatched them. They were meant to be staying with me for the holiday and then coming with me to school once term re-started to be our new school pets. So how come they're still here?!!! First of all, I decided they needed to stay a bit longer to grow more before the rowdy children got near them. Then I decided a change of scene so soon was not a good idea. Then I thought it was good for my 10 year old to learn a bit about looking after them. Then we named them. Today I spent time with the School Council looking at nearby poultry suppliers to see where we could go to buy some for school. Good job I hadn't told them about the bantams! Have spent a lot of time reading posts on this forum over the last couple of weeks to help me learn fast. It's been a great source of information for an accidental new chicken owner who didn't expect to be smitten. missusmac 3 bantams - Mathilda, Dorothy and Beatrice - and an Eglu Go, somewhat surprisingly Sorry, haven't even sorted out my profile on here yet. Jenthelibrarian
Hi! Just wanted to say: Mathilda is an excellent name for a hen Also: we have bantams at the school where I work, and they are a delight, but we have learned that it is necessary to be very, very firm about the kids wanting to feed them cake and crisps and all sorts of other unsuitable things that little fingers can poke through into their run... missusmac
Hi, thanks for the welcome. Yes, I think it was the naming that did it Don't know what we'll get for school yet but am enjoying looking! Needs to be docile and good with children, particularly as mine have special needs. Have been to a poultry place on the Warwickshire/Leicestershire border and looked at some. The owner has recommended a choice from her hybrids - a copper black maran, a light sussex and either an amber, a blacktail or a ranger.
