Cinnamon
Do I win a prize for girliest post of the year??? My Brother is getting married this weekend & I have been nurturing my normally short nails into a very small bit of length (still no longer than the tips of my fingers) and filed squoval. But my thumb nail has broken,& it hasn't just broken anywhere - it has broken half way down the nail, right onto the nail bed. Normally I would just cut the nail short or pull it off,but as its going to tear the nail bed & I have a lovely pink glitter varnish to wear for the wedding,I want to save it for the weekend if I can. At the moment it has a couple of coats of clear varnish on it,in the hope that it sort of sticks it down & protects it,but it isn't really working & I am eyeing my tube of superglue........ Anyone have any remedies for me?
kinsk
Either go to a nail salon and ask them to do a repair for you using a silk wrap. Or you can do a bit of a home repair with a piece of teabag and superglue. Cut a small piece of teabag so it covers the whole of the split and around it, dab a tiny amount of superglue onto the nail and gently press the teabag into it, using something other than your finger or you'll just end up with your hands glued together. Try to spread the glue out to the edges of the teabag, using a little bit more ontop. Allow to dry then cover with a couple of coats of clear varnish and then your pink sparkly stuff. Just becareful with the glue!
Goosey Lucy
I used superglue on a toe nail that had ripped, sorted it out brilliantly. Didn't use a bit of teabag tho, that sounds interesting! Good luck
Reikiranf
How frustrating, I hope that you get it sorted, my nails are generally good but I guarantee as soon as there is an occasion of some sort on the horizon, they break in the days leading up to it, I had to have acrylic nails put on for my ED's wedding a few years ago
Alis girls
be no mucking out of chucks till after the wedding then I am sure i have seen repair kits in Boots. I can't have long talons because of my job plus they break anyway.
patsylabrador
I can't help with nail emergency but I have found a product which has helped me heal weak nails. Normally they flake and split vertically and horizontally. It's a product called Healthy Hoof. It is apparently the ' original equestrian formula used by horse trainers'. No idea if that is true, but it works like magic and is the reason I've started wearing nail varnish again.

Thanks for suggesting that - my nails are dreadful, despite me rubbing cuticle balm in nightly (and wearing rubber gloves when I remember). I will have to try it, hopefully they stock it at our local horse feed place. I hope you get your nails sorted out for the wedding Cinnamon. The Dogmother
Never had that happen, but try superglue.
Cinnamon
The superglue seems to be working well No time to get to a nail salon sadly....& we don't drink tea This thumb always break very low down & I think I have worked out that it is from pressing the start button on my mobile phone,so am using another finger while it is bad,to keep from stressing it any further. Annoyingly a tiny split has appeared on the other side too now,& also on the other thumb nail
Seagazer
I had this happen to me earlier in the year - the split was so low down in my nail bed. I hadn't thought of a home repair, will remember the tea bag and superglue trick. I ended up getting a mobile nail technician in and had a lovely set of gel nails until the split had grown out. bluekarin
Until I started to grow my nails, I never understood why people, especially women, got upset over this. But I now do understand. Not that I get emotional about it, its more that I've tried so hard not to bite them and then they split. Mine get to a certain length and then start to split and get weak. They are getting better though after almost 15 years (yup, for that is when I stopped biting them. Shameful I know) of keeping them trimmed short and trying to cut them if they start to go seems to work. I too have caught mine and they then split right down to the bit where they and the skin is attached and it really does sting. I hope the superglue works (I have no other suggestions to make). Maybe cut it as short as you can once the glue has done its work?
Tweety
There is a brilliant product called Renovate by Leighton Denny, which I can really recommend for weak nails. My thumb nail has a huge split in it running from the cuticle to the end of the nail, causing the side of my nail to break off low down no matter how careful I was - it was very painful, unsightly and took ages to grow out, only for it to split again. Someone recommended Renovate, and I have been using it for about 6 months every night. The results are excellent- the split is still there, but the nail is now strong and has not broken off again since I started using it. Great stuff! Cinnamon
That has now been added to my ever expanding John Lewis basket I am not really a big nail person either, & we cannot wear any polish, even clear, for work & no gels or falsies either, but I like them to look neat & tidy & I do paint them occasional for events. But this split is so low down that it is really sore.....I will cut the nail as short as I can & try wrapping a plaster over it or something until it grows out I think. Alis girls
Can I ask where you get Renovate from? as I said long talons are out as I might impale a patient The woman who delivered my first child had long talons encrusted with diamonds - I was very nervous about them indeed and was worried my ES would come out with one embedded in his scalp. thankfully he didnt.
