bluekarin
Hi all. I am after some breakfast suggestions for my ED (15) who is on lots of medication for a condition she has. Sadly, this also means she feels sick pretty much all the time, especially in the mornings. She currently has ready brek, but will only eat a few mouthfuls. She also will eat a bit of a wheetabix. She doesn't like egg not really keen on toast and when she will eat it it has to be more like warm bread. Any suggestions really are greatfully received
Cinnamon
How about dry (ish) biscuits, like those Belvita breakfast biscuits maybe? The honey & nut ones are delicious. Ginger nuts might be worth trying too,as they are great for nausea. Or Scotch Pancakes - they are nice cold or warmed up. Hope you find something... must be miserable for both of you. kinsk
Was going to suggest something gingery as it's great for nausea. Would she drink honey and ginger tea first to settle her stomach a bit and then have something to eat say half an hour later? I went through a stage of feeling quite sick in the mornings due to having to get up at the crack of dawn, the only thing I could face was really strong cheddar cheese and little silverskin pickled onions. The fat in the cheese just seemed to settle my stomach and give me a protein boost. Have you tried the travel sickness bands? A friend of mine is using them at the moment for her pregnancy related morning sickness and says they are really helping. Hope you find something that works x
Lesley
It's difficult with strong meds isn't it - L has the same problem. When she's here I take her meds and a plain biscuit before she gets up....like the others have said ginger ones are good. That seems to help with the nausea but it will still be an hour before she can face eating more breakfast. A mini fruit salad might help? - banana, apple, orange.... loumabel
how about a warm croissant or a danish. not greatly healthy i know but at least its fuel.
craftyhunnypie
When I was very poorly last year, I survived on toast & jam ( no butter). But my main saviour was apple juice for drinking & dry rusk biscuits ( baby food) for eating. I know it sounds yuk, but hows about some plain boiled rice - it's good for iffy tummies. Good luck. patsylabrador
Does ED fancy any food at all, even something that seems unsuitable for breakfast? If I'm ill I fancy salty food like crisps or pizza or tomato soup. I don't think it matters whether its a breakfast food. Cold stewed apple is easy to eat and settles the tummy. I think breakfast foods were designed to refuel and just the thought of them and their seriousness can be quite nauseating if you're off balance. Better to have ice cream and sprinkles and fun than nothing if that's what she fancies.
Daphne
When I had constant nausea all I could face were dry boring biscuits and plain water. When I felt a bit better, no matter what time of day it was, I ate whatever I fancied, on the basis that my body was losing a lot of good nutrition so getting something inside me was better than nothing. Perhaps your daughter could concentrate on having a more substantial something mid morning or whenever she feels like it? I thought of a smoothie as a way of keeping her liquids up, with some nutritional goodness - banana, honey etc? I know it might be a bit too gloopy for her, or she might not fancy it. Another idea is to make some bircher muesli, which is just muesli soaked the night before in juice and yogurt. This makes it soft and easy to eat/digest. Its also very filling. bluekarin
Thank you for all those suggestions. Unfortunately, she is a fussy eater with regards to foods with certain textures. She said she will try the breakfast biscuits, but is not keen on the other suggestions. Unbelievably, she said no to the icecream! She also doesn't really like croissants or Danish. I have done smoothies for her at the weekends, but might do them during the week too, just need to get up that it earlier. I took her meds up when she was still in bed and although she still feels sick, she wasn't so a good thing. I will do the same again tomorrow, with a biscuit and see how she goes. I think she was so sick yesterday as she had her physics GCSE and wants to get a very high mark so was anxious over that. I have. Told her she doesn't need to put herself under so. Much pressure, but due to her condition, there aren't too many avenues open to her job wise. She had a hard enough time trying to get a weeks work experience because of her wheelchair. Anyway, thank you again, and please keep the suggestions coming
Fourbecameeight
I have made smoothies for my children in the mornings using tinned fruit in juice or the tubs of chopped fruit in juice. Just empty in and wiz, very easy and cheaper.
kinsk
I know it might sound daft but slimfast drinks are quite good. They aren't great for dieting but they are packed full of vitamins etc. you could try them as a supplement to her diet.
Chucky Mama
How about forgetting about all the traditional breakfast things and looking at any food. Might she be tempted with something that is a meal that is more acceptable at another time of day. A bowl of pasta for instance or some egg fried rice, a muffin with a homemade pizza style topping or basically any food that is not a breakfast type food. I am considering anything, but as I say, she is a fussy madam - always has been
Chucky Mama
Oh dear What sort of textures does she like?
loumabel
How about crumpets or English Muffins or rice pudding. It must be a huge worry for you, I hope you find something she can tolerate soon.
bluekarin
She doesn't like mince when it's in spag Bol or shepherds pie but loves it in chilli con carne. She doesn't like food to browned, hence warm bread for toast. I have now got a couple of Belvita boxes from Waitrose as they were on special. Also going to pre make pancakes and spread with Nutella and chill rolled up ready to heat up in the morning and see how that goes. Bought bananas for smoothies as well. Fingers are crossed
emily95
You could try making some milkshakes too - with banana in or something. When I get nervous I feel sick and dont feel like eating anything - so I usually make/get my dad to make me a milkshake for those mornings! I think he also adds some sort of protein powder to it - I'm not quite sure what it is specifically but I know my parents bought it from Holland and Barrett or somewhere like that. Other than that, I can always manage a salad - so maybe a fruit salad? or a normal salad with lettuce perhaps? I hope you find something that she'll like
Chickendoodle
How about oatcakes spread with something - peanut butter, nutella, jam......?
bluekarin
We now have several different breakfasts - banana, peanut butter and honey smoothie; almost dry Shreddies; peanut butter and jam on warm bread; Belvita honey and nut biscuits; pancakes with choc nut spread or lemon and sugar. These seem to be going ok. Not stopping her feeling sick, but has been able to keep the foods down. I don't think she'll ever want to eat breakfast again, but she will eat most of these when they are given to her. Thank you for all your suggestions as it has been most helpful
