Guest
I don't know how to publish sound clips, Clare. Sorry!
The Dogmother
Can we link to them on a website? maybe Kate can help... What sort of stuff do you sing?
Guest
Seriously off topic here though my chickens always come to me if I start singing - they seem to like it! I sing classical stuff - church music, lieder, oratorios. I'm not greatly into opera unless it's early stuff like Purcell, Handel or Mozart. I am singing a concert in February which will have Bach, Wolf, Elgar and Britten in it. Apart from the concerts which are a new venture, I sing at weddings and funerals mostly. I love being able to make someone's day really special. Music has very special effect on people and tends to stay in the memory. I don't have a website - perhaps I should advertise myself and get some more 'gigs'
The Dogmother
I'd certainly love to hear you if you get some clips on a site. I used to sing in the school choir - we did Faure's Requiem (amongst others), which is still one of my favourite, most moving pieces of music. I had Pachelbel's Canon and Massanet's Meditation played at my wedding (not that they did me much good on the marriage front!).
Guest
My husband and eldest daughter sang Fauré's Requiem last night in Southwark Cathedral. I love it too. Rebecca is singing the Pie Jesu for her RSCM Gold Award exam next Monday. I sang 'In Paradisum' at a funeral last Friday - a really sad occasion. Pachelbel is really popular at weddings. I don't think I know the Massenet, that must be quite unusual. Well done! We have someone who has requested Prokofiev's Montague and Capulets for their wedding next year. A very odd choice! Two families at war with each other, I'd love to know more! The Bride wants to come in to that and they want to go out to Beethoven's Ode to Joy We were quite traditional. I came in to Trumpet Tune by Jeremiah Clarke and we went out to Mendelssohn's Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream. We should split this and see what other people chose! The Dogmother
I had Jerusalem at my wedding - odd, I know, but my favourite
Lesley
I've split this from the Avian Flu topic - any thoughts on it's title? I've called it Ginette's singing but can change it - what do you think?
Guest
Definitely change that please Lesley! How embarrassing! What about 'Wedding music' or 'What music did you have at your wedding?'
Guest
Jerusalem is quite popular at weddings - we've seen quite a revival of it over the past two summers. I have also used it at a funeral this year, which worked quite nicely. The family wanted me to play it over again as the coffin went out at the end. On a good organ it's really thrilling to play. We had 'Love divine all love's excelling', 'Faithful shepherd, feed me' and 'The King of love my shepherd is' at our wedding. Some people have terrible trouble choosing hymns because we don't sing them in schools any more, so people don't know them. We have 'Give me joy in my heart' a lot and 'Lord of all hopefulness'. I'm glad my children know lots of hymns or we might have to sing 'Cauliflowers fluffy and cabbages green' at their weddings!
Mrs Frugal
We were quite traditional. I came in to Trumpet Tune by Jeremiah Clarke and we went out to Mendelssohn's Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream. So did I!!! With Albinoni's adagio inbetween . Lesley
My sister sings as well Ginette. Same sort of things as you. She's been living in Grand Cayman for 4 years and now she's home she has re-joined the local choir. Before she went she was a soprano with the CBSO Choir and her husband also sang with the CBSO. We had many visits there to hear the CBSO with Simon Rattle conducting - before he left for Germany (?) She sang at our wedding.
Guest
What music did you have at your wedding Lesley? A friend of mine and her daughter (Jane and Elisabeth) sings with CBSO. Her husband was a lay clerk at Lichfield Cathedral.
Lesley
I walked up the aisle to Handel's Berenice - minuet and came back down to Jeremiah Clarke's Trumpet Tune We had the hymns: Love Divine, all loves excelling. Lord of all Hopefulness, Lord of all Joy. and... To God be the Glory. The choir sang The Lord Bless You and Keep You - John Rutter and Karen sung Faure's Pie Jesu which isn't really a wedding choice but we like it The reading was 1 Corinthians 13 - just in case you needed to know I should imagine your friend will know Karen and Paul. Lichfield is our favourite Cathedral - we go there quite often.
Guest
That sounds lovely Lesley, really special. We use the Lord bless you and keep you a lot for weddings, baptisms and generally. We also like Rutter's Gaelic Blessing Not sure I know Berenice, but maybe I would if I heard it. Another 'unusual' choice. This is SO interesting! Cate in NZ
Oh boy, I'm not even sure that I can remember my wedding music- it was a long time ago now. I did have "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring", in fact if I remember right I think I walked down the aisle to it, then had "All things Bright and Beautiful" as a hymm, ostensibly because of the children there, but also because I loved that, and I did feel bright and beautiful that day. Everything else is a blur. It's so interesting to see what others chose though, although not being terribly musical myself (tone deaf if I'm honest ) some of the more obscure classical titles are a complete mystery to me
Guest
When I was a child in the choir, we sang 'Jesu, joy of man's desiring' at every wedding! It was our standard piece. I like All things b+b (my customary abbreviation!) too, especially the last verse. 'He gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell how great is God Almighty, who has made all things well.' Bizarrely I learnt a beautiful descant to it from a child's tape of songs. It wasn't a hymn selection, but just happened to have All things b+b on it. Popcorn
Oh Gosh, it sounds you all had very classical music on your wedding days. I'm not a massive classical music fan, although I do like some. We decided when we got married to have music we love and all our friends love, so we had all the old crooners - Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jose Feliciano, etc.....by the time it came for me to walk down the aisle everybody was sat singing away, it was brilliant! I actually walked down the aisle to an acustic guiter version of The Bridal March which was just lovely and we walked out to The Ramones - Baby I love you! Guest
That sounds like a great wedding Gina. The important thing is to include your guests so that they are part of the ceremony. I love hearing what people have chosen. There aren't any wrong answers and it might help when I'm helping couples to select their music! So come on, tell me some more . . .
