Leaving the door open?

Recommended Posts

So, we have always closed the door of the coop and opened it on the morning. We take in the food and water then put out fresh food and water before we let the girls out. I've just been shouted at as its far too late to let them out and it won't be long til they are going to bed after me!! I'm thinking I might brave leaving the door open, but what do people do about food and water?

I leave the food/water out at night and fill them up each morning.

I started off bringing everything in every night and did this for months but now have to say I do the same as ANH. I don't leave the door open as they make such a lot of noise early in the morning and I worry about our neighbours.

We have been shutting them in at night/opening up in the morning over the colder winter months, and we do leave food/water overnight. Morning visit is made with jug of warm water for the icy Glug

They are not let out until human getting up time, sometimes as late as 8.15am. The guy who sold them to us told us not to worry about letting them out at the crack of dawn, and they have been absolutely fine and both lay well.

Last summer we were leaving the door open, but shutting them in Friday and Satuday nights so the neighbours weren't tormented by the happy-egg-song early on weekend mornings

We both think the hens have quietened down a lot, maybe with maturity and familiarity with their home, but probably we're getting deafer in our old age :)

We always leave the door open, only at winter when it's really cold do we closer the door and the latest they are let out in the winter is roughly 8am'ish. We leave the food and water out, we have a Cube (pink) and an egos classic (pink) and with the shades on they are suitably covered and the hens don't make that much noise in the morning.

It's entirely upto whether you lock the door or open it in the morning for them at certain times but I'm sure the hens will be alright regardless

Good luck :D
