Can I put 2 broodies in 1 cage

Recommended Posts

I keep my broodies together but they have separate nest boxes. But they sometimes leave their nest and sit on another nest with the other chicken, so i would not recommend it especially if they aren't in nest boxes. Chickens that share a nest rarely hatch anything.

Hope that helps. GNR

lol !

It is a big cage however I popped them both in it and Prilly was really grumpy about the whole affair and took it out on Clarabel who is faultless and to be honest has possibly learnt her broody feeling from Prilly. I took Clarabel out as I had a job interview today and couldn't be around to supervise I have just got back and Clarabel is no longer wanting to sit in the nest box and Prilly is still less than impressed and has knocked her food over in some sort of protest

Should I keep Prilly in the cage overnight and should I bring this cage inside if I do (Oh I can just see hubbys face it is going to be a picture !)

Thanks

It took just 2 days to sort her out, as for Clarabel she just seems to want to follow any of the others into the nest box and watch and if they let her she sits in too, worryingly Annie seems to be doing the same and I have caught her twice rolling the other girls eggs under her tummy so it looks like I will need to be keeping an eye on her ! Not sure if this normal or the start of broodiness if it is im tempted to put her in the cage for a day ??

As a fellow pekin keeper I would say this is classic "Ooooo I think I might want to go broody" behaviour!!! I would say pop her in the anti-broody coop and watch her, if you catch it early enough they snap out of it quicker and go back to laying quicker.I've had 3 be big time broody already!!!!

A tip you could try if you're around at home (I do this on my days off) is collect the eggs as often as you can and once you're sure everyone has laid block off the nest box in the cube. I use the smallest sized trug...fits perfectly (top tip from the Dogmother :D )

I had two broodies stuck to the nest yesterday evening; I turfed them off and when I let them all out in the morning, I popped these two up the other end of the garden and told them 'first back on the nest is going in the Cage of Shame'. Ruby Tuesday is in said cage now and will be followed by Lavinia, who, rather cruelly, has only just started to lay again at the age of about 7-8 years old.

I have come to the conclusion that mine are just taunting me  in an attempt to send me insane .

Prilly is the worst she has feigned a leg injury had me worried sick for a few hours assuming she had slept awkward on it ?? Her part time attempt at being broody and yesterday playing dead ! I suspected she was having a dirt bath but for a minute I did wonder as she was deadly still and allowing Trixie and Clarabell to peck her, anyway opening the kitchen door had her up as quick as dickie lightening .

Anyway the 2 pekins and Prilly are all being closely monitored, I have a packed week coming but if there is anymore signs from the Pekins they are off to the

the Cage of Shame'

The bonus to this is that I do get some lovely cuddles from Clarabell who can usually out waddle me (she knows I have mobility problems and takes full advantage of this)
