Sarattie
My ladies wake up at 5am and squwark and cluck and I (my OH) is concerned about the neighbours, and realistically I'm not getting up that early to let them out, and at least the house dulls the sound a bit as when they are out its even worse!! Is there any way of keeping it darker inside the eglu for longer to fool them into thinking sunrise is a bit later than 5am!??! This eve I have thrown over a couple of sheets to see if that makes any difference and I seem to remember I think omlet selling a coop cover? Would this work?! My girls are generally noisy and we do live on a housing estate so I guess not being popular is inevitable but I want to try and queen them as much as possible!? (I can't let them out tht early to roam the garden as I would be worry about foxes at that time too) Any tips!? Thanks

auntielizzie
My girls started doing this a few weeks ago when the mornings started getting lighter. OH helpfully suggested I leave them with the pop hole open so that they could get out when they wanted to keep them happy - but they were even noiser then :!: so I shut the door firmly again the next night I decided that at least the sound is muffled with the pop hole shut Anyway, after a few days it seemed to settle down again and most of the time they're fairly quiet and wait patiently to be let out (apart from a few grumbles). I have no idea why they started being so noisy, but things did return to normal after a few days. Sorry not much help, but perhaps this is the way it will go with yours? By the way, I think we are much more sensitive to the sound of our chickens ourselves as I think we unconsciously listen out for them. As far as I am told by my neighbours, they either don't notice them,or say that they enjoy listening to them. The main concern of neighbours seems to be the fact that "chickens attract rats don't they?"..........
Sarattie
Auntielizzie I think our hens were from the same hatch!! Exactly the same here!! They have quietened down a bit now so I am hoping they will stay that way. I think ill stick to closing the pop hole for now as it keeps them quieter for a bit longer. I have had one grumpy neighbour...... But she has a cat, and as they make a racket when a cat in the garden, I didn't bother apologising!!! Sues never apologised for the cat poo I have to clear up!!
