Anyone tried painting their kitchen unit doors?

Recommended Posts

I've had it with our grim, cheap, fake wood effect laminate kitchen unit doors, (it was here when we moved in). It all needs replacing, but until we decide about an extension, it needs to stay.

I've been thinking about painting the doors with cream paint specifically made for the task and replacing the handles with nice wooden k"Ooops, word censored!"s. If it works, it will be a big improvement, but OH is nervous about me starting incase I totally wreck the joint!

Does anyone have any success stories I can tempt him with?

Yes, I painted mine... many moons ago and could really do with painting again

I cleaned them thoroughly- sugar soaped them and used an eggshell paint with a small foam roller (apart from the cutting in bits). Think it took a couple of coats and we also added some small wooden handles.

It worked really well and gave the kitchen a whole new look. Not difficult to do :D

Best of luck!

OH did much the same - also worked well.

I did the wooden doors in my typical eighties kitchen. I used the Crown cupboard makeover paint the first time and it really didn't like the varnish on my doors despite thorough cleaning with sugar soap and a good sanding as prep. After about two years of constant touching up I bought a bluish green silk finish gloss and re-painted them with that, that was about 4 years ago and they need doing again in places, but overall it looks great and has been pretty hard wearing. I used a roller for a smooth finish and did both sides of the doors for a completely finished look, it took a long time because I have a lot of cupboards and I did two coats on the outsides. We then bought some chrome k"Ooops, word censored!"s to finish the look, it modernised the kitchen no end :D

The main reason that I need to do a couple of the doors again is that they got splashed with oven mate which has made tiny holes in the paint which was oil based, so you do have to be careful with that, but they clean beautifully with normal kitchen degreasers like the Dettol one.

OH has been wanting us to replace the kitchen unit doors for a while as they are a nasty laminate that has chipped all round the handles where my little ring has rubbed it  . I know that getting new doors would be cheaper than getting a totally new kitchen and frankly we can't afford that, but if painting would work then that would be even better . . . especially as OH would do the painting, not me
