Advice needed - cut feathers, mites or worse

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was hoping for some advice, one of my girls is very under the weather, she is a one year old Isa. For a few days last week she had been laying what looked like big lumps of scrambled egg. The feathers round her vent and underside had become very matted and I couldn't get the egg out so I had to cut it out which meant cutting off quite a lot of her underside feathers. I have now discovered that she is infested with lice or mites not sure what the difference is. They look like tiny little flies with eggs. Couldn't see anything in the coop. On Thursday night I treated her with total mite powder and started a 7 day course of Flub in case there is a worm issue.

She is very lethargic and very hunched over, her tail feathers are practically trailing on the floor. She almost seems to be waddling about more than walking and she looks very bloated to me. I am having to lift her into the cube at night as she is unable to jump up to the ladder. She is eating and drinking.

Is she waddling and struggling to jump because I cut off her feathers or does all this sound like more than a mite/lice issue?

All advice gratefully accepted.

Hi all,

Wee update on Cluck Norris, vet said she is almost certainly egg bound. She was given an antibiotic injection and an anti inflammatory injection. He said her abdomen felt as if it still had a bit of egg jammed inside so a hot bath and massage was prescribed. She had a very nice birdy bath in my bucket and a 15 minute massage and was then put to her bed. Basically it is a wait a see, I am hoping that as she was matching a dog in the vets bark for cluck that she still has some spark in her and will fight it.

I'll update when I have more news.

Thanks

Chelle

She's gone. I was dreading opening the egglu door this morning and when only 3 jumped out I knew the worst. I don't think she lasted long after I put her to bed as she was in the same spot I put her in in the nesting box. Hopefully she wasn't in any pain after her injections and her bath and she went peacefully.

Oh I am so sorry. I have been logging on to see how she was doing and laughed at the bark and cluck episode in the vet only to read the sad ending. They are so good at hiding illnesses that it can take you by surprise, but you did everything you could have done.
