Parents have to pay for revision classes in state school?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I was talking with my neighbour who is anxious about her daughters forthcoming A levels.

I was surprised to hear that the school put on revision classes but parents have to pay for them.

Is this legal ?

Seems very unfair on pupils whose parents can't afford to pay.

Any teachers out there know anything about this ?

Our school puts them on after school and some staff are running classes in the Easter holidays for GCSE. I would be surprised if they are allowed to charge without the provision for free classes for the disadvantaged. There is usually a fund within each school to cover this sort of thing. Schools often ask for a 'voluntary contribution' which allows them to charge but not disadvantage anyone who cannot afford to pay. I could afford to pay for revision classes if our school charged but would not be happy if they decided to charge. Some classes are behind because of the standard of teaching

I just spoke to my daughter who is taking her AS levels this year, and her school offer revision classes for which there is no charge. She is at a grammar school which recently became an academy if that has any bearing on things. It doesn't sound right if they are being charged though.
