SarahGlymond
hi guys im still in my first year of chicken keeping as was wondering what time peoples chickens go to bed ??? usually at the moment my girls go to bed between 8pm and 830pm but today I got home from worked granted a little later than usual around 730pm and the had already gone to bed !!!!!! I only let them free range when im home but I only have two chickens and they are in a cube with an extension on the run why would they have gone to bed so early it was still very light very bizarre ??? I go on holiday on Monday and my sister is looking after them she only lives at the top of our estate they wont get to free range as much im worried they will be spending all the two weeks im away in the nest box !!!!! Luvachicken
I wouldn't worry too much. One day this week my girls went to bed at 7pm because the weather was so miserable. Today they went to bed at 7.30pm. Mine do seem to go to bed quite early - they are just over 2. The original omlet girls I had 5 years ago used to go to bed about 9.30 pm at the height of summer, maybe pekins are different, or maybe they just haven't seen a decent summer. Firescorpion
I agree with luvachicken mine go to bed quite early depending on the weather , when its a nice day they go to bed at about 8 8:30 but when weather not so good they go to roost at about 7ish . its mainly to do with the light spectrum because naturally chickens will roost at dusk as a defence against predators. ( foxies come out to hunt mainly at dusk to dawn .)
SarahGlymond
Thanks guys wondered if the rain had anything to do with it ? Any tips on keeping them entertained In the coop while we are away I put broccoli and sweet corn so they can jump to eat it and I have a rolly treat ball is that enough they have logs to perch on x
Firescorpion
Chickens love scratching around looking for food ( piles of leaves etc) I would avoid putting in grass clippings though as grass, though they love it! it has hardly any nutrients. mine love climbing too . sounds like you got everything covered for entertainment . miller30
Im sure they are fine I would love it if mine would go to bed early just for one night they stay out until 9 so by the time ive finished cleaning up I normally get back in at 10 for my dinner that's the worst part about this time of the year leanne
merlina
Mine have gone to bed uncharacteristically early this week too I think they're just fed up with the soggy weather - we've had torrential downpours every day for a week They're very happy to be out in the morning and don't seem unhappy in any other way. They do manage to get themselves soaked through every single time - despite having plenty of dry places to hide!
percy049
At this time of year, 2 of ours usually go to bed at around 8-8:30, depending on the weather Our Rhode Rock stays up later than the others, usually until around 9:30!
Purplemaniacs
My Bantam Babes were still up at 10.00 last night when I went out to shut them up for the night. My big girls always go to be first. They have separate accommodation. Chrissie
