Sarah 2
Ok, I know this topic has been talked about loads. But the flies are doing my head in. I've tried a Flitrap and bokashi bran but nothing seems to be working. They're are no flies in the run or near it. But they're all around the washing line and sand pit. I haven't tried garlic powder does it really help? I'm thinking of containing them in one part of the garden but the chooks are becoming so noisey. Do I need to get a water pistol? starboyhull
I have mixed citronella and water in a watering can and just done the whole garden with it..... I think there is more flies because of the weather.......I would try citronella, works really well for us
Sarah 2
Good idea. I use citronella oil in the run and eglu. Maybe I need to spray some on the patio. Good advice. What do I do about their crowing? It only happens when I'm outside, they're trying to lay or a cat is in the garden. I would like to use my garden without upsetting the neighbours. Minky
I reckon it's the weather too y'know. I was up the garden the other day thinking, oo, few flies about that's not good - then I looked over next door and she had even more in her henless garden
starboyhull
I either ignore ours when they make a noise or I have a spray bottle which I have set on a jet spray instead of fine mist, a quick spray usually shuts them up.....Ours are good 99% of the time though.....Usually only make a noise after they have just laid an egg, which I dont mind.... I am hoping it is the weather but even if it is I am sure my neighbours will blame me but then again I could just be being paranoid. It is just embarassing when people come round and there are swarms of flies
starboyhull
I really think everyone is suffer with them at the moment. Everywhere you look there are flies, and lots of mozzys........Having animals just make you more paranoid I think as you blame them for the flies. chelsea
it is the weather, and I dont know if you have the same where you are but down here we have a brown bin collection (food waste, etc ) every fornight which means the bin is left stinking and awful in this hot weather - not nice
starboyhull
Im very glad ours is once a week, although now we recycle a lot more we dont seem to have that much rubbish, Couperman had a thread about the bokashi composters, I think we will be investing in one of those as the only real rubbish we have is food waste that cannot be composted in the usual way....... And the amount of packaging that is still not recyclable defies belief. I am seriously thinking about jumping on my soap box and giving Tesco & Sainsburys an ear bashing about their poor performance in this matter! Ladylucan
Well i have been using the garlic powder for just over a week now and i think its great, i have noticed the amount of flies has gone down dramatically. obviously its summer and we still have a few , but the difference is amazing, and the smell too has gone down. Def worth trying ,

See this thread.[/quoteI use garlic granules as I was having problems with the powder . I'm not sure just how much they eat though. Am thinking of reverting to cloves in their water. I am trying to work out how many fli-traps we would need for our garden. I think we would need 2 but i am not sure and OH is away until monday (he's my human calculator). I shall certainly order them though edit to say.... I just went to order 2 and they doubled the postage from £4 to £
arowland17
we had big fly problems the 1st couple of days we got our chickens as we moved the run and the flies settled where it had been and there were swarms of them but now we have kept the run in the same place and the chickens seems to keep the bluebottles at bay and they only settle in the run when the chickens are out free-ranging. We have put down hemcore and water the run daily with a watering can containing a few drops of citronella - also water any other areas like the patio and next doors fence as we can hear the bluebottles over their side (I assume because their garden is a tip and their cat poos in it and probably leaves dead things there). It seems to work really well - we pick up any poo that gets done in the garden straight away so flies dont settle on it and have a flitrap up (not sure if it's working, has more wasps in it that flies but will wait and see..) We were on the verge of taking the chickens back and selling the eglu the flies were so bad as first but now there are no more flies in the garden than there were before we got them so it's all worked out ok!
