Chickabee
I use oregostim for my chickens. I was reading the label after Beantree said something interesting about it. There are only 2 ingredients. Water and origanum. I've looked up origanum and it does indeed have some very beneficial easpects. However, I was wondering if I should just buy the extract. It would be a lot cheaper, but i wouldn't know how much to give them. Do you think it's too much of a gamble http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0956713503001464
The Dogmother
You can easily grow Oregano in your garden and give them some, but I have a large (farm sized) bottle of Oreg-Stim, which I add to the water every now and then and it lasts for ages. I wouldn't add it every day, just roughly once a week; it is beneficial to their immune systems and also digestion. You will find that their poos are drier and smaller as a result. Beantree
I read the article Chickabee. Says one of the components kills bacteria and makes it suitable as a preservative. Trouble is the gut is full of friendly (and some unfriendly) bacteria, necessary for good digestion. How does it know which ones to kill? I don't dispute that it appears to have beneficial effects in chickens, but is that because it kills everything in the gut, good and bad, then only the good stuff redevelops? Chickabee
Good point Beantree. I don't use it all the time, just after worming or when the girls are a bit stressed. I'm not one for antibiotics and lots of antibacterial cleaners in the home. I would only use those funny little "good bacteria" drinks if I had a bout of illness myself. In fact I've never used them.
