Are my new chickens hens ?

Recommended Posts

hi I am new to this site and am in need of some advice! We have 10 chickens in total. I took two in a month ago in good faith for a friend! They are really loud and sounds like a cock a do do! There pekin bantums by the look of them and 6 months old. There not laying, we're just conceded it all noise and no eggs. We have other breeds that are laying everyday. We have be researching into it and it says there late egg layers and some hens can make the noises they both do! Could really do with any advice. I have separated them into a smaller coop so there in the dark till I let them out just concerned that neighbours will complain if it carriers on.

Thanks

Do you have any photos you could post on here. Someone might be able to identify them for you.

Do you live in a town or city? If you do, you probably can't keep cockerels so may need to get rid of them if they are male (and someone does complain about them). Check on your local council's website, usually in the environmental health section (then under noise), that should tell you if they will allow cockerels.

Thank you for your reply! I shall try and post some pics as its really frustrating! There dear little things but today they have not made the noise today! I have been shutting them away until late morn as at home with the baby so we shall see!

They might be yelling a warning if there's a cat or sparrowhawk in the area. 2 of my pekins yelled to kingdom come. One just stayed quiet even after laying. I only have one left and she does yell for all of Britain to hear when she lays. Plus at this time of year you may not get any eggs until next year as being breeds they tend to stop over winter. My one is also moulting so no eggs from now on.

Its a bit touch and go as to whether six month old's will lay this year now, many will just lay a few eggs then break for the winter, the odd few will lay right through. I would'nt say that no eggs means there is a risk of them being cockerels

A Pekin cockerel is very obvious at six weeks old, have a Google (Feathersite is good) for adult Pekin cockerels they are very distinctly different from the females and hopefully that would put your mind at rest
