bluekarin
I need a bit of advice. My friend has got this horrible infection. Started Sunday but she didn't realise what it was and woke up with a rash Monday morning. She has been taking antibiotics from her dr but has now been to hospital for antibiotic IV, 2 so far, and is due her third tomorrow morning. She has just shown us a photo of her leg which has a huge orange sized blister on it! I am a bit worried, and have told her so, and asked if it might be worth phoning a&e, just for a bit of advice. I think I scared her a bit, which I apologised for and she said not to worry. But, anyone in the know, when do you worry with regards to this infection? I read a bit about it and it's suggested she moves her foot a bit to try and reduce the oedema and she said she will try. But really, any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks
Olly
I had this a few years ago on my hand - it can progress scarily fast, I just avoided needing intravenous antibiotics but I remember sitting in A&E watching my hand swell. is the blister/swelling getting larger? It's worth taking a photo or marking the extent of it somehow to see if it's increasing. It does take a while to go down after antibiotics and it looks awful, so it may not be as bad as you think. bluekarin
She drew a line on Tuesday to keep an eye on the spread up her leg, it this blister has come up today I believe. She has spent today in hospital so I am sure they have told her what to keep an eye out for. I'm not sure her rash is going down though She has another friend staying with her as she has three kids who need looking after, so I am sure she is in safe hands. I just hope the 3rd IV antibiotics tomorrow do their magic

The Dogmother
That sounds horrible. I know that Chelsea, who used to post on here, suffered badly from it, and was hospitalised. Good that you care, and that she is keeping an eye on it.
bluekarin
Didn't know that about Chelsea. I am friends with her on FB so might message her about it. The friend is going in for IV antibiotics round 3 this morning but has packed her bag just in case
The Dogmother
She hasn't been on here for ages now, but I am pretty sure that she had it on her leg or foot a few years back.
Alis girls
It can take time to go down and if shes on IV antib's sounds like its being looked after. If shes not happy may need to be pushy. If she has a high temp - red lines coming from would (like tracks) unexplained vomiting and diarr or any obscure symptons she should report immediately. Common causes are bites (seen some horrendous ones this year all in the UK too) and any open wound. My son years ago got beginning of septacaemia from a minute ankle wound - so dont under estimate how bacteria can get into skin. it progressed rapidly but was stopped with prompt treatment. If its open they could take a swab to see if right anti'b for the bug in there. But if its not open then that might not be possible. Hope shes better soon. Snowy
We had a patient through a few months ago who had developed huge blisters like that - they decided she had reacted badly to an insect bite I hope your friend is OK xx
bluekarin
Not heard anything this morning, but she was allowed home Friday with 7 days of antibiotics to take. They have done a culture so waiting to see if she is on the right meds. She has been told it's going to a long slow healing process which she is none to pleased about. On the up side, or possibly not, the blister burst She covered it straight away like they told her to, so hopefully she won't have any complications from that. Thank you so much for all your advice
