I have just started a new Futurelearn course about moons. It is so good and so interesting. YS has a very strong pair of binoculars and tonight, despite all the light pollution I was able to see Jupiter's moons. Trying to remember their names.....Callisto,Io,Gannymede and Europa. It was very exciting, like magic. I've learned lots in the few days I've been doing this course. I want to sign up for the course about the Holocaust and the one about North Korea. They are free and there is no pressure - what's not to like? I can't emphasise enough just how much fun these courses are. I started one that I didn't really enjoy so that was that, I didn't lose anything but I am glad I tried it.

If nothing else I am better at pub quizzes.

Sounds fascinating, PL. Do you end up with any kind of qualification at the end of a course ?

Not as such. It varies. Some courses you can get a certificate of achievement, some courses have an optional final exam but I can't remember if they can be applied to anything. After my last post I registered for three courses - the two I mentioned plus one about Richard I I I, I cant think of a better way to begin a new year. All I am spending is some time.

I haven't started it yet, as I've been really busy, but will be catching up when I have a week off the week after next

 

I was motivated by my 4 year old nephew who knows more about moons of planets than I'll ever know

I was so amazed at being able to see Jupiters moons through binoculars I ended up buying a telescope. Took this photo recently, you can just make out a moon on the top left (looked better through the eyepiece).

I can see two.....I only had one glass at lunchtime as it was YS birthday party and I really needed it! Buying a telescope, tho...theres dedication for you Looking forward to more cosmic pics

How fascinating and what a beautiful photo. I bet that North korea course is incredibly interesting, please keep us informed with any little nuggets of information you might pick up.

Jupiter is a good binocular object at the moment, as it's at opposition. Which basically means it is at its closest distance to the Earth. Any decent pair of binos, say 10x50, will clearly show the four Galilean moons, assuming that they aren't in front or behind the planet.

The Boy would have had his bins out if there'd been less cloud. I can't use them; I am astigmatic, so my eyes don't work well with binoculars.

 

BTW (if we get a clear sky) the ISS is going over just after 6pm on the 14th - a Valentine's flypast

I bought a telescope when my kids were younger, it was great but the only problem was I focused on something then jumped out of the way and by the time my kids got a look it had moved out of sight

I love the planets/space stuff, the distances and measurements are absolutely astronomical.
