here's the result....

 

I have actually made two more jars, one is in the fridge in the process of being eaten, the other I have given to my parents. It tastes fab, & has the consistency of Robertson's lemon jelly marmalade

Well done Jules . Looks fab!! I've got 14 jars of crab apple and clove jelly on my preserves shelf now along with 2 jars of crab apple and mint jelly and a flaggon of crab apple brandy sitting in the larder, working its magic .

Looks lovely Jules - did you use red apples or the orange variety? I have orange ones (or will have when they ripen) and was told they will make a light pink jelly.

I used a few red apples which my next door neighbour gave me,& as I did not have enough of those I also used some baking apples from the orchard behind my parent's house.

I've only got 500g of crabapples. Will the cooking time be the same?

I've just used a similar amount of quince and the initial cooking time was less - and quince usually take a long time. I don't know if this was becasue they were ripe or because there were less though.

You just need to cook them until they're soft Egluntine. I used a potato masher to squash all the juice out.

Worked well and tastes divine.

 

Feel free to ignore the crumbs on the table cloth.

 

Scotland Yard would have a field day with that thumb print in the front of the jar.

The first year I made crab apple and clove jelly, I only had enough crab apples for one jar but it was wonderful! Enjoy it, Egluntine .

I prefer jellies to jams - just love that translucent look. Crab apple and clove has to be my favourite though - try it with a slice of lovely thick ham Egluntine.

Just ressurecting this one as it's comign up for that time of year again. I'm just off to get the first load of crab apples form a very early tree. Mine aren't nearly ready yet

We used to add rowans to it to make it pink - I love apple jelly

That's interesting - theere's a bumper crop of rowans this year so I'm going to get my recipe book out and see what we can make.

Thank you Susan, I may have to try that. I am covetting the apples on a neighbour's tree and will have to ask if I can harvest them - they don't usually do anything with them

Just wondering - could you use Cinnamon stick instead of cloves - or would this be - thought I might get an apple pie type flavour, but may be wrong

I've not thought of that before, but it might be nice. You could try it and see.

Have scrumped the crab apples (shhh - don't tell) and do not have a jelly bag. BUT I had a brain wave and am going to construct a triangualar bandage hammock thingy - for my apple and cinnamon tryout .

 

Luckily I have the house totally to myself - so if there are any disasters I can have it all cleaned up before anyone comes home tomorrow

Try using a pair of tights SarahJo, you might need double thickness if they are sheer though.

SJ, I lost my strainer last year & rigged up a sort of hammock thing out of a muslin square,which I got in the baby secion in Tesco. I hung it between 2 chairs.

Finally - have my little set up, straining the apple mush as I type. .

 

Will do the sugar bit, and bottling tomorrow - just hope it all turns out ok, the cinnamon did smell nice
