South facing garden

Recommended Posts

I have a south facing garden and it does get very very hot when we have summer. I know that hasn't been much of an issue this year :?

When I get my chickens should I try to make sure that the eglu is in the shade? Or if it I leave it position it in the sun will they be okay going into the house and get cool that way? I don't want to deprive them of the sunshine but I don't want to roast them either

Mine over summer on a very exposed and sunny allotment. They do prefer shade and overhead cover so for the summer I have bungeed an old parasol onto the run ( otherwise it blows away)- it gives them shade and lets the wind circulate and they seem happy. At the moment they free range most of the day but when they are shut in I am not worrying abut them overheating. In the winter they get the shower curtain winter shade and that does the trick then.

Our garden is south facing with no trees etc for shade and the eglu gets very hot when it's in the sun all day and you can feel the heat coming out when opening the eggport on really hot days - on the few hot days we've had I draped old towels over the top of the run along with the sunshade that comes with it and they settled down in the shade for most of the day.

I was going to stand out parasol next to the run so they're in the shade but still get a nice breeze but so far haven't had a sunny enough day to do so

My back garden is south facing. Last year during that now forgotten heatwave it was far to hot for them and I had to cover the run with old duvet covers and continually saturate them with water to give them some respite.

Now they are in a shady area and we've had no sun!
