JM
One of my new chickens (got them on 8 March) - had a mucky bum yesterday but was OK in herself. When I washed her bum, she had a soft shell half in/half out... She has been laying well for a couple of weeks. Today she's been hunched and quiet - with a mucky bum again. She stayed in the nest box for most of the day and around lunchtime she produced a sort of mucusy egg (no shell) - so a I thought she'd pick up once that had passed. However, she stayed they same - quiet, hunched and apart from the others. she's drinking, but I've not seen her eat (she's usually eager to eat!). Her comb is red and she is looking around her... (I've not cleaned her today as I didn't want to add more stress). When the others went upstairs I to the cube to bed, she stayed under the ladder - until I lifted her into the sleeping area. Any ideas? Oh yes - I started a worming cycle on Sunday with Flubenvet. Thanks in advance Jill Edited April 23, 2015 by Guest
Mrs_B
I've had hens act sheepish after laying a softie a few times with being new to laying - or when a hen comes into lay after their winter break. They've been back to their normal self within a couple of days normally. Have you felt her tum to see if there's a blockage or swelling? What do her poos look like other than watery? Have you tried to feed her something like mealworms? I found if a hen isn't interested in those, it's a sign they're definitely not interested in food! I don't have a huge amount of experience, so hopefully someone will come along to help too! Hope your girl feels better soon x
JM
Thanks for the reply. Unfortuately when I came down this morning, she was at the bottom of the cube steps - off to chicken heaven... Poor little thing. Jill
mullethunter
I'm sorry to hear that. Sounds like she probably wasn't poorly for long though which is good.

gavclojak
oh bless....I was going to say, if you had to lift her in to the cube then that usually indicates a poor outcome. however poorly mine have been they have managed to go to roost but the ones that I have had to put in the cube have lasted no more than 24 hours unfortunately. Sound like a case of peritonitis.
