Selling at a Car Boot Sale Question - Update

Recommended Posts

This is a really silly question  but as I have never sold at a boot sale before its bothering me

Long story short - you'll be pleased to know - I am planning selling at the areas biggest boots on Sunday morning. Its open from 8 till 1 with set up from 7. My question is.......would I have to stay till 1.00pm or can sellers just leave when they like? I can see it may be a prob Health and Safety wise to have cars trying to leave whilst people are still buying from others...hence the question. However, I really don't think I can sit there all on my tod (OH and boys will def be left at home!!!) from 8 till 1!l!!!!

I know when I sold stuff before moving for Uni we were finished after a couple hours and were allowed to drive off as people walk along a lane in front of the cars and behind the cars is reserved for driving along.

It may vary by location though...

I've done a couple of boot sales in the past and some people usually manage to sneak away a bit early - very very slowly! It depends really how the sale is set up and where your stalls ends up. :?

You usually get quite friendly with the people either side of you, a must if you need to pop off to the loo!

Beware of the dealers who hassle before you have properly set up and try and buy your stuff really cheap, before selling it for inflated prices on their stall. I once had an old guy who acted all feeble and paid pennies for some action toys "for my little grandson"...... no, he was a dealer and made a load of money on his own stall a few rows down!

Good luck. Hope it stays dry for you. :D

Tetsworth?

If so then you might find it's just too busy to be able to drive out.... That said I was there with a friend at the weekend and although it was really really busy, most sellers had gone by 12.30

The field was also nearly full by 7am so don't get there late!

In my experience it depends how busy it is, I have only done ones local to me and they're all different but there's usually no hard and fast rule about staying, it's more the practical aspect of whether you can get your car out.

Echo the points above about dealers  Take a flask and something to eat if you don't want to spend all your earnings on bacon sarnies! Take a deckchair so you can sit down. The time goes surprisingly quickly.

If this weekend was anything to go by then 7.45 will definitely be too late to get a spot! If the weather looks good then it's well worth the effort to get up and get there for 7 - the time will go really quickly. Definitely take a chair, some food, plenty of water and some sun screen!

There are always a couple of obvious dealers, but we've found it to be the same few blokes and whilst they're a bit cheeky they are pretty good natured.

Best tip: pack your table into the car last!

Thanks for all the tips, everyone! Looks like I'm up for an early start then

I can be very firm about things and would not let stuff go for less than I wanted for at least the first hour and a half until lots of people have looked as I can always lower prices if things don't seem to be selling....that seems a good way to work out proper prices!!!! I have rough ideas as to how much I want for stuff anyway.

Maybe I'll see you there, Katy....I'll be in a grey Passat estate and very silly sunhat!

I'll let you know how I get on!!!!!

Don't forget to put any puzzles into sealed plastic bags inside the box.

Me and my daughter spent ages counting all the pieces/doing the puzzles and took them to a sale only for some little children to fiddle with stuff under our table that we didn't notice.

We sold a puzzle to a little girl later and her mum said she was fed up with puzzles that had pieces missing so I explained that we had counted all the pieces.

Sadly when we packed up our stuff there were 2 puzzle pieces on the grass and we had no idea which puzzle they were from, I just hoped it wasn't the lady that bought the puzzle for the little girl.
