Does anyone know whether a super king size duvet will fit in any domestic washing machine. The reason I ask is that my washing machine has finally given up the ghost after about 10 years use so I need to replace it. I am looking at the larger size ones wondering about duvet washing as mine is long overdue so maybe I could kill two birds with one stone.

 

A 10kg machine is my favoured model currently. Anyone got one and if so how much can you realistically get in?

I've got a 6kg washing machine and our 4 tog super king duvet regularly goes in it. I'm pretty sure I've washed the 9 tog in it, too, but I've only ever had that one on the bed once and it was a while ago.

 

In fact the only thing I've not been able to fit in is an enhanced mattress protector from M&S, which was also super king size. The padding made it impossible. We ended up having it dry cleaned and they dry cleaners lost it!

I have a 9kg load washing machine and I don't think I'd try to wash our king size 13.5 tog duvet in it. It's not so much squeezing it in, it's the weight when wet! I'd worry it would damage the drum. I am sure there are machines built to take these size duvets so would be worth having a look around.

A 9 kg drum would be able to hold 9 kg of dry clothes and of course also wet.

I would just ask the guy/lady at the shop for advice. It's really dependent on the machine.

For real economy we bought an A+++ rated Bosch 7Kg. The duvet gets washed at the launderette.

Ummm, I don't know that I would risk a big duvet in a domestic machine....as a wise one has already pointed out this could damage the drum with the weight when fully saturated.

 

I take my duvets to the launderette....they have just upgraded their machines and have fast ones that will wash a duvet in 30 mins. So, even allowing for drying time (not bone dry, just enough to take some of the moisture out as I put them on the airer at home) its all over and done easily within an hour for around £8.00 all up.

 

If you send a duvet to the DRY cleaners then they only wash in a big machine and will charge you way more so worth it if you can get to a launderette!

Cinnamon - I go to Wheatley. Its quite handy as I drop the boys at Little Milton and go on from there....only another 3 miles! The Wallingford one has closed now but they only had the old, slow machines. There is one near the JR in Oxford but the Wheatley one is good!!

I do my king sized duvets at the launderette too - I would worry about damaging my washing machine.

Ive had to order the machine, a 10kg one. As a neighbour said you can manage without a dishwasher but not a washing machine.

 

Seems like a trip to the launderette is in order. Daft question but I wonder if I need lots of coins??

Some laundrettes off a drop of and wash type service. We used to take ours to one where we'd drop it off one day and collect the next, so we'd only really do it if switching from a winter to a summer duvet.

 

I am aware that if the machine says it will take 9kg of clothes that it would also be able to bear the weight of them wet I just worry the amount of water a king size duvet would soak up might upset the self weighting system they have for uneven loads. It only takes a spin at a funny angle for the drum to be knocked off centre.

You could phone and ask what the machines take before you go otherwise just make sure you have around £10 in £1 and lots of 50p and 20p coins. Also don't forget the detergent and sofner....they usually sell it there in a machine but I always prefer my usual stuff to avoid any 'reactions' !
