robcal
Hi all, I've been considering getting some hens for a while now, but have been put off for a number of reasons. Now though, having seen the Omlet Cube, I'm rethinking. So, apologies if the answers to all of the following questions have already been asked, but here goes: 1. Foxes We have a fox den behind a shed. They come out at day and aren't particularly timid. There's no point in trying to move them on - they'll just be replaced. The trouble is, we work during the day and I'd want the hens to be in the run. How fox-proof is the run which comes with the Cube? Would the hens be terrified by a fox coming close, to the point it would affect their well-being? 2. Time The hens would be in the run while we're at work, but at the weekends I'd put the fencing out to give them the run of the garden when we're around. Is this OK? 3. How much money do people spend on the upkeep of their hens once they've set up their run etc? Thanks in advance!
mullethunter
In my opinion unfortunately only one of these questions need answering and the others become irrelevant. The girls might be physically safe but I don't think it'd be fair to them and would stress them too much to have a fox CONSTANTLY trying to get them - which I'm pretty sure is what would happen. Sorry.
sparkysmum
Hi, sorry to be negative but have to agree with mullethunter. I'm afraid that a garden which has resident foxes is not a suitable place for hens. The stress of being harassed daily but animals which want to eat them is likely to make them very unwell indeed. Sorry. Ax
Ain't Nobody Here
Sorry to say, I have to agree with the others. You would have no idea what was happening while you were at work and as well the stress for your hens, personally, I would find it too stressful coming home each night wondering what I was going to find . clucker1
I think it depends on how large your garden is. If it's very large you will be ok providing you have a very solid run. A friend of mine has a similar set up to you with a huge garden (acres) where foxes and chickens live alongside each other, her walk in run is fox proof!
