mullethunter
When we were hanging the washing out yesterday morning I noticed something that looked a bit odd in our little pond. Turned out to be a massive (head sized) clump of frogspawn! This stupid mild weather has really screwed up the wildlife. Now I just hope we don't have a cold snap or I might have to try to stop it freezing. Anyone have any experience of this or seen any spawn yet? Luvachicken
The frog spawn will usually survive any frost. My Mum often gets frog spawn in her pond long before I do but she hasn't got any yet. Watch in the early evenings and you see the frogs frolicking around and hear a lot of croaking.
Cat tails
I have one giant frog in my pondless garden. I have evicted it a few times, but it keeps coming back.
mullethunter
Better build a pond then Cattails
Cat tails
My tiny garden is full enough with the chickens already. Found the frog in my living room one evening... Was merrily hopping around in a corner.
Luvachicken
Chickens eat frogs given the chance Cat tails, you can have very small ponds that your frog would be happy in
Cat tails
Clearly the frog is happy enough to keep coming back, pond or no pond. I have moved it three times to a big pond near my house. I have no clue how it is getting in though, because I have a closed fence almost all around the garden.
Alis girls
We had a huge toad last weekend - I rescued him from our youngest cat and put him over the fence. Dont know who has a pond round here.
Grandmashazzie
I absolutely can't stand frogs. That hopping I imagine they are going to land on me-ridiculous I know. I think I read somewhere that they return to their birthplace, maybe there used to be a pond in your garden Cats Tails.

mullethunter
Frogs were really noisy after dark last night! There's more spawn in the pond but I've also found a load on the ground beside the pond. Do you think this was a frog accident or an aborted predation? The Dogmother
How odd not seen any spawn here, but we have crocuses and blackthorn blossom out already.

mullethunter
A lot of it was stuck to the ground but I've put as much as I can in the pond. The 'spots' in the original clump are changing shape and getting more tadpoleish

Luvachicken
Doesn't take long for them to grow. Do you have any fish in the pond as they will eat a lot of them ? Also, once their little black bodies have hatched out, the left over gloop is a bit mank
mullethunter
No, no fish. It's only a little pond. I've only seen a few water beetles and other tadpoles in there.
Luvachicken
That's the best kind of pond to have Once Summer comes you will have loads of creatures - pond skaters are one of my favourites, along with all the beautiful dragonflies and damselflies, especially demiselles - not sure about spelling - but very pretty. And of course with all those frogs going to grow you won't have many slugs and other naughty bugs because they will eat them all
Alis girls
Ooh I say rampant frogs. Havent seen our toad again. Noticed some dwarf daffs were in flower. Sooo early.

mullethunter
Went outside just now to check I'd shut the girls in properly and nearly stepped on one of the blinking frogs!
Alis girls
I suspect the frogspawn on the lawn was a frog who was caught short Bit like those ladies of an age who need the loo asap
mullethunter
Just went out to cover the pond to stop the frogspawn freezing, but couldn't because there were about 8 frogs in it It's less than 3 feet square!
