Alis girls
Or Phwoar and peace as the Daily Mail calls it.Anyone watching it? Really enjoying this - has anyone read the book? There are some nice guys which are easy on the eye. I did find the bit where they sawed a guys leg off and then showed him a bit gory. Even with my strong stomach. Grandmashazzie
I haven't read the book and was looking forward to some great British Drama. I have recorded it and watched 2 episodes and can't really get into it.
chickencam
A friend of ours, asked me if we were watching it, and I said that I have a policy of not watching something unless I have read the book. His answer was 'but you won't will you' which is probably true. He is very well read and he hasn't read it either. In truth I generally hate watching films and to series if I have read the book, so not sure where I am going with this .... Debating whether or not to watch Room at the cinema because I really enjoyed the book, probably won't
Olly
I have read the book, and it's brilliant - it's a bit of a cliche that it's so long "Ooops, word censored!"ody's ever read it etc, but if you like Dickens or Trollope or similar then I think you'd really enjoy it. I'm always nervous about watching things when I know the book because I already have the characters in my head. I watched the first episode and thought it was very good but it should have been a 13-week series, they have had to cut out some details to make it short enough. Not sure if I'm going to watch the rest. I've actually read it more than once, that's how good I think it is!
chickencam
I may well give it a try next winter then, thanks. I already have a lengthy list of books which I really want to read, so it may have to wait until then. I do most of my reading by the log burner in the winter, too busy outdoors with the garden, allotment and chickens for the rest of the year. I do dream of a deck chair and a good book at times though, the only good thing about winter is reading time.
Grandmashazzie
I too will add to my list then. I am really loving Dickensian and am going to start to read and re read him. Roll on caravaning, me and my mobile library.
Valkyrie
Read the book and loved it. I liked the battles! (And I loved Pierre.) Bit like The Nightrunners of Bengal - very descriptive in the battle scenes. But we are recording the episodes to watch back to back. I'm not sure OH realises how long it actually will be! Alis girls
Definately going to give the book a go. I like Pierre too. I have never heard of the actor - love James Norton - easy on the eye. The er mail nuditywas unexpected - used to female nudity - I dropped my biscuit in my tea. The TV series isn't hitting the spot for me. Will stick with it, and might inv st in the book, provided that it is available on Kindle. Olly
It is, that's where I re-read it most recently. I'm pretty sure it was free. I think a lot of people are put off by the names - e.g Pierre is also Count Ber ... er, something or other, most of them have more than one name depending on whether they're being addressed formally or informally. Once you get to grips with that, it's just great historical drama.
Ursula123
It is free on Kindle, just downloaded it. Just to find time to read it now.
Valkyrie
I don't remember nuddies in the book - will have to read it again too! Did you manage to rescue the biccie before it went soggy?
Cinnamon
I hated it & gave up after a couple of episodes. And normally I adore a good costume drama. It just felt wrong - contrived somehow. And the divine Tom Burke is in it too, so normally I would have stuck with it for that alone
Daphne
I've read it, a couple of times But I eventually came to the conclusion (no need to rush is there!) that I didn't like it, or Tolstoy (having read a biog), and so haven't ventured near a Russian novel since; too much angst, too many names and too many downtrodden serfs - I found it very hard to relate to a medieval society with its ties of ownership and basically realised I didn't care what happened to anybody I also haven't watched the adaptation, even though its by Andrew Davies, as I'm not keen on the pages and pages of battles and I realise how shallow I must sound, but even I realised I couldn't just watch it for all the big dresses swooshing about. Nudity, what nudity?!
Alis girls
I think if you blinked Daphene you missed it. I am not alert as i was in my yoof and frankly if 10 naked young men walked past me it would probably be awhile till I realised Yup rescued biccie - I only eat 2 a day cos I am prone to being fat so no way I am gonna waste my cherished rich tea. Ain't Nobody Here
I gave up half way through the first episode .
Valkyrie
Glad to hear the biccie was rescued even if the verdict on the programme seems to be ticking the "no" boxes. Still waiting for the end so we can watch and I'll be comparing it with the excellent one with Antony Hopkins (not Sir then). A bit like Colin Firth's Mr Darcy - definitely the best one there! Alis girls
I'm too young to remember the other version no more looking at male totty in tight breeches on a Sunday night I can now watch James Norton playing a baddie in Happy Valley. Dont think hes as handsome with skinhead haircut. Back to reading my novel before bed
Valkyrie
Graham Norton will always be Father Noel Furlong to me! A baddy I cannot imagine at all - he's way too cute. But I guess he wants a change. Well we are getting through the episodes. Must admit it isn't a patch on the first one. Some of the acting is soooo awful! Quite disappointed really. So while we watch I'm usually playing on the laptop or doing sudoku. I get bored when the acting is not up to par - although Sam Worthington and Jason Statham are excused! Alis girls
I think you are getting your Nortons mixed up James is the young dishy one now in Happy Valley as a Psycho - Graham is the middeaged Irish guy who does talk shows and Saturday on Radio 2. Graham Norton as a psycho doesnt quite fit somehow but its an interesting idea

Alis girls
Graham in tight riding breeches is a tad disturbing glad it made you laugh Cinnamon. Poor Graham - no disrespect I love your show.
Daphne
We found out the other day that GN doesn't live that far from us, never spotted him though I was busy cooking in the kitchen yesterday and didn't hear OH padding down the stairs. 'Hello' he said. I turned round and shrieked. In broad daylight, middle aged man in brand new, sparkling white long johns
