Food recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Hi! Now that the bag of layers pellets we bought as a starter kit when we got our chickens in almost finished I wondered if there was a specific brand/food that is generally considered to be the best (for health and eggs!) or are they all much of a muchness?

Interested to know what other chickens are eating!

I always say you get what you pay for, better to have a good quality layers pellet and not have to supplement.

I use Smallholder Range pellets and some other good quality brands are Garvo, Marriages and Fancy Feed.

I get the cheap whole sale stuff from a local merchant who sells it per kg. Which is great, as I only have 3 bantams and a big bag of feed would last me months and months.

I would look for something you can easily buy in your general area. Like Mullet says, some chickens develop a preference and when you can't get hold of your brand for some reason, it might not be pretty...:lol:

I feed my girls Dodson & Horrell.

When I once tried a cheaper brand, they hardly touched it.

Of course they also get plenty of greens, grapes & tomatoes, with some mealworms and corn as an afternoon treat some days if they behave!

If garvo were available locally I would use those I suspect, but there are no local suppliers.

I use Dodson & Horrell too, the layers pellets and their mixed corn.

Our ladies also get grapes, meal worms and mini corn on the cob and if the cats leave any of their food, the ladies get that too. Not that they're spoiled or anything
