sparkysmum
My very healthy but elderly araucana managed to get into the field behind the house the other day and was, we suspect taken by dog or fox. She was 8yrs old still laying and had never had a days illness in her life. We do miss her and her eggs and are busy trying to source replacement hens without much success. Would prefer banties but would be happy with any araucana. If you know of anyone who has some for sale could you let me know. Thank you in advance Ax
The Dogmother
Sorry to hear that Allison. Have you looked in the back pages of Practial Poultry magazine? There are lists of breeders in there, by area, I think they cover Scotland too.Another good option is to look up online for a list of shows, go and look at the sales pens (I get all mine this way) and speak to breeders to see if they have any spare stock to sell. I have 2 pure breed araucana bantam hens, and also 2 of a newish hybrid - Blue Angel, which is a cross between a white leghorn and an araucana. They are the same size as a full sized Araucana, but slighter in build, they are white, with grey marbled markings and the expected topknot. Mine produce beautiful, biggish, pale turquoise eggs. Good luck, and do let us know how you get on.
sparkysmum
Hi D/M thanks for your reply Sadly no araucana breeders up here that I can find. I contacted Dorinda who sold me my original pure breeds including my araucana but she is now living in France but hopefully she might still have some contacts in Scotland. I love the sound of your Blue Angels!!! I will certainly email Anthony for info. I was wondering if there might be a wee space in a courier van already coming up here Thanks for this info Ax
The Dogmother
That's a thought, I know that he has courier end birds before, although it has to be a specialist livestock courier, and they're not cheap. Wonder if anyone in here is going even part of the journey, and we can set up a chicken train.... I've done that in the past, especially for rescued lurchers. I've done that in the past, especially for rescued lurchers. Very nearly did this for some rescue yorkies, but in the end, didnt need to. I have emailed Anthony and I I am excitedly awaiting his reply! Will keep you posted. Funny how the loss of some hens is harder than others. Lewis
Ahh you got her from Dorinda - small world! I was going to say she's moved but she'll know of people locally who have Araucana if anyone does! You can always contact the Araucana Breed Club as they have a list of local breeders.
sjp
re the blue Angel also try searching Cheshire Blue Hens it's either the same hybrid under a different name or a similar cross from a different breeder
sparkysmum
Hi Lewis! Thanks for your reply! Yes purchased all my hens from Dorinda except for the ex batts of course! Fabulous set up and hens so well looked after. Will be a great miss in Peebles I'm sure. Have contacted the araucana club but no replies so far Ah well, I'll see what tomorrow brings. sparkysmum
Well, rather disappointed to have received no replies from either the Araucana breed club or Anthony at Cotswold Chickens. Thinking there must be a world araucana shortage Atm out of 5 hens only one is laying , 3 are persistently broody and my little poot is way beyond laying. Only 1 Scots dumpy lays anything like regularly. What should I do.................def got room for 2 banties .............. or maybe 2 more ex batts.......what would you choose? mullethunter
If you would go for hatching eggs, there's a chap near me who shows Araucanas. I think he has LF but definitely has banties. He regularly sells hatching eggs through EBay and occasionally sells hens too. Let me know if you're interested and I'll PM you.
The Dogmother
Anthony can't see the email from you, but he says to ring (number is on the site homepage) as they have lavender and black araucanas, and a small number of Blue Angels too. gavclojak
Ex batts will solve your egg crisis. I am getting two eggs a day from my four remaining girls
sparkysmum
Hi !and thanks again for your replies mullethunter, hatching eggs would be lovely but I absolutely couldnt cope with cockerels. Its really hard to sex araucanas until they are a bit older than others and I would become far too attached to them........... Anthony can't see the email from you, but he says to ring (number is on the site homepage) as they have lavender and black araucanas, and a small number of Blue Angels too. Thank you D/M I'll phone him this morning Ex batts will solve your egg crisis. I am getting two eggs a day from my four remaining girls Ah gavcloak, too right. If I I'm unsuccsessful in my araucana quest, I will be first in line for the next Scottish rehoming. Best wishes. Ax
sparkysmum
Well, great excitement! Have spoken to the lovely Anthony of Cotswold Chickens and yes he has some araucanas, either lavander or black and as D/M says a lovely hybrid called Blue Angel which also lays blue eggs. Maybe a weekend in the Cotswolds in the next few weeks? He is going to look at courier prices for me as well. Thank you for your help in this D/M soooo appreciated Ax Plz excuse if this reads like an advert for Cotswold Chickens, totally unintentional. The Dogmother
Great news; do let me know if you're in the area, and perhaps we can meet up. Always best to phone A before you set a date as he doesn't always have stock of everything, but is happy to reserve birds for you. I can also recommend some lovely places to stay in the area. The Dogmother
Tell you what... they were mad as frogs when i got them, but they settled nicely when they came into lay. Now , they are lovely girls who lay reliably most days. Biggish pale turquosie eggs. Not sure if there's a photo on the website, but they are a slim, leggy version ig a LF araucana, so not big by any standards. They are white, with a small crest, and lovely grey/black marbly splodges. Cracking birds!
Chickabee
Oops I think I've ordered 2 Blue Angels. The very nice man at Cotswold Chickens said he often has deliveries of coops for my area. Next time he does he's going to send a couple of Angels my way
The Dogmother
I think he is happy to reserve hens provided people pay up front. I know that Anthony travels quite a bit up to the Sheffield area for their other company, so could drop off there. They also get out delivering coops and runs, so I guess could drop them off then too.

We are not too far away and got our Lavender Aracuana from Bank View Farm in Sheffield this month but I thought it was an independent operation. Interested as useful to know all the Poultry places in the area.
The Dogmother
The company in Sheffield isn't to sdo with chickens. Try asking Egluntyne; she's in that area and will be able to advise.
