Quiet chickens ?

Recommended Posts

 Hi everyone,

I used to have chickens when I lived at home a few years ago and I'm missing having them around. My husband on the other hand is not so keen and has asked me to find out if there is such a thing as a quiet chicken?

I am looking at Pekin bantams but have never had bantams before only the usual kinds of chook. GNRPP(white chicken)

Thanks in advance

Emma

Well not sure about that but we do have slightly noisier ones and those who are a little quieter but not noticeably. When they lay an egg they are all capable of letting you and the neighbours know about it and other times they do it on the quiet  !I would say that our marans coucou along with the red and black ones are quiter but we have a medicis and she is a little noisier. The sussex is neither quieter or noisier. If the medicis is being stroppy she will make quite a noise for a while but our neighbours are quite a distance from us so it isn't a problem. I am sure someone else will come along with their experiences as well.

Pekin fan here Emma but I can only say I have 2 noisyish ones and 2 very quiet ones

They do seem noisier during late spring/summer but do not make a noise all the time, mostly when eggs are about to come/have come or if something frightens them.

You will love having Pekins - they are very pretty and fluffy and have fab personalities :D

I agree with Luvachicken really. I have two Pekins...at times, and again mostly in spring they can be very noisy. Usually if they want to lay an egg but someone's in the way, or sometimes for no apparent reason other than they just feel like a whinge! But most of the time they're not too bad - and I do love them.

I also have two Wyandotte bantams who are generally are quieter than the Pekins - they don't really moan, just shout when they've laid an egg or are upset.

A couple of months ago I got 2 young araucana bantams and so far one is very quiet and one is noisier than all the others - she shouts as soon as she sees me!

Unfortunately, although so breeds are particularly noisy, there's no such thing as a quiet breed - it just depends on the individual.

I have to admit to laughing when I read the title of this thread; as has been aid, there's no such thing as a quiet chicken, although bantams have slightly less volume than large fowl. Pekins are definitely gobby madams!

My bantams certainly have some volume on them! I secretly love it when they do their little round of anouncing eggs, with all pitching in. Although they have been anouncing phantom eggs for the last few months... :wall:
