Hello

I've been asked a question by a friend who wants to keep some chickens, but she wants more than 1 cube can hold (without it feeling mean), so she was wondering: could you connect 2 cubes to one run, or would the chickens get confused about where they live?

I'm sure you physically can connect more than one cube, but I have no idea if the hens would be able to recognise which of the cubes was their designated home?

Any ideas?

Andy

If hens have a choice of house they tend to go where they like, rather than where you want them to be  I would have thought that one run to 2 houses would provide insufficient space, even multiple runs, given how many hens you could fit in one cube, unless they had plenty of free range/ extra electric netting pen space.

She has three acres of land - I doubt "we're" looking at a normal sized run. She's the kind of friend that doesn't do thing by halves... she told me she'd like to adopt some animals about a year ago. She now has two dogs, two cats, and three rescue donkeys. Yes, three. *Donkeys*!

Donkeys that's my dream.

If they have plenty of space in their run or to free range I don't see it would be a problem. They will all probably choose to squeeze into one cube. Your friend might need to check if they need to be in a covered run and if not now could she cope in the future.

Oh, I'll warn her then. Maybe the thing to do is for her just to buy a very large wooden coop and put it in the run instead.

Unless we can persuade Omlet to produce a super-cube!

I do think it was a bit weird that Omlet made the new cube smaller... saving money I guess.

Why does it matter which chickens live in which Cube? I bet she'll end up with 20 crammed in one and none in the other

I don't think it matters - I think she was just curious to find out whether they'd be smart enough to know to split themselves between the two coops... but I'm thinking from the responses that I'm over-estimating where chickens land on the IQ scale.

Apart from food... then suddenly they go all Sherlock on you, where you are hiding the food...

Haha, that's true!

My girls are not subtly when it comes to that - as soon as they hear the back door go, they immediately hop up on the perches nearest the house and start clucking away.

And I'm sure they have some kind of sixth sense when it comes to knowing when I am carrying corn.

I have two cubes attached by their 1m runs to a 4x2 walk-in run. A bit palatial for two hens but I wasn't about to part with a cube, especially as I may need one for intro's later.

My two are very clear that the (cube green) is for sleeping in and the (cube red) is for laying eggs in - not sure how they decided this, but this is the way it is.

When I had more hens (12 at one point) they used to divide themselves between houses - usually but not always the same ones in each house - quite often eight in one and four in the other. Think they just like to be with their particular friends.
