lost-sheep
yes believe it or not my chooks WILL NOT eat the pellets. we have just bought 2 new girls and they eat them normally (about 100g each) but my pellet protesters hardly eat that in 3 days they seem to like the corn though... i only give them a little bit each day, they also like green veg and grass so they arent off their food or anything... they've always done it but now i'm concerned that maybe they will starve if dont do something... any ideas? chelsea
are they laying yet? my two ate a lot more once they started laying. Dont give them any treats until the afternoon, that way if your protestors are hungry in the morning they have no option but to eat their pellets! Egluntyne
Maybe they would prefer mash. Add some water to the pellets until they are like mushy weetabix...they might go for it.
lost-sheep
they are laying nd have been for quite a while... mash sounds hopeful... except it sounds like a night mare to clean up if they decide... no thankyou!!... is it messy?? Milly
My hens would rather eat anything rather than the dry pellets, but I wanted to make sure they were getting all the nourishment they needed to lay eggs (and I had the Omlet sack of food to use up). So after reading about people's hens which liked weetabix and water, I tried adding some water to the pellets. They now eat it all. I leave the dry food in the grub, in case they get extra hungry, and they eat some, but they definitely prefer it with water. I don't leave the wet food for more than a day, as I think it would go off, but it isn't usually a problem as it's normally all gone by the end of the day. Snowy
Mine also love it as porridge. They normally get a bowl of s"Ooops, word censored!"s for supper, but if there are no s"Ooops, word censored!"s they get pellet porridge instead. You'd never know it was the same as their 'normal' food! The enthusiasm!
arowland17
That's a good idea, as our two love their weetabix and water, might try pellet porridge - it's on days like at the weekend when we're able to let them free range most of the day I worry they don't eat hardly any pellets as my plants in the garden are much more appetising, and our two I'm sure wouldn't realise it's pellets mashed up in water, they'd eat anything out of their blue treat bowl, it's like a magic spell when that bowl is in sight!! Dogs Too
A question, are the hunger strikers used to a different pellet? When I received my chicks I gave them the Omlet organic pellets and they flatly refused to eat them. I then found out what they were being fed on, got a kilo from a friend and then weaned from old to new as it were, worked a treat! Hope this helps

Milly
thanks guys i think i will try mash now... so how many pellets and how much water or is it just until it looks right?? I put a scoop of pellets in a bowl and cover them over with water. And I add some dried garlic (after reading on here that it helps to reduce smelly poo). You would have thought it would make it more smelly, but it doesn't. Milly
