Princess Lay-a
Hi there, We have recently rescued chickens from being caged layers and one has developed a sore eye. It was inflamed and sore so we pulled her out and isolated. I have been researching and have been treating with saline and Chorzig twice a day but with no difference. Each day she’s gradually closing her eye and keeping it closed and as it scabs it keeps it closed until I soften the scab with saline. It’s become itchy for her when I treat it with saline. If anyone has any experience with the look of this eye, please help. Thanks in advance

mullethunter
From what I can see on Google it looks a bit like fowl pox. Where are you?
Princess Lay-a
In Australia. What would be the treatment for fowl pox? Are there any more photos you want to help diagnose?
mullethunter
All I know is what I’ve found on google. If it is fowl pox that’s a virus so it’s more a case of making sure she has excellent nutrition, avoiding secondary infection and waiting for it to go away. The Dogmother
Yep, mullethunter is right, that's Fowl Pox for sure. There's nowt you can really do for it, but treat it as you would chickenpox (heehee... sorry!) in humans; boost the immune system with a good quality poultry tonic such as nettex's Vit Boost and use their nutridrops for 3-4 days as well. Isolating is a case of horse/door/bolted I'm afraid; it is a dormant virus, which rears its head when there is stress in the flock that lowers their immune system. The rehoming will have been enough to trigger this. The B vits in the Vit Boost will help with their stress and provide her with extra nutrients to support her immune system. It will take 2-3 weeks, but she'll recover if she is kept calm, fed and hydrated now.
Princess Lay-a
Took her to the vet yesterday and he wasn’t sure but said to keep going with the anti-bacterial stuff for 10 days. This morning though she’s scratched the scab off and it’s looking like it’s improving.

Luvachicken
How is her eye doing now ? I hope she is OK.
Princess Lay-a
So her eye was on a great road to recovery, she was brighter and looking well in herself and then suddenly she became lethargic and died about a week after that previous photo was taken. The poor love probably had something else going on for her inside that we didn’t know about and the vet couldn’t diagnose. At least she had a good end to her life being rescued from being a caged chicken and spent it with lots of yummy food, hot water bottles and cuddles ❤️❤️❤️
