Popcorn
or when you see shop signs that say CHARLIES PINE like the one down the road from us.
The Dogmother
'everyday' is another of my pet hates, as are apostrophes used wrongly. I know that I'm not always right, but I do try to make sure that they are in the right place.
Mrs Frugal
I was taught "different from" and not "different to" so every time I hear that it grates on me as does seeing "alright". It's "all right"!
The Dogmother
My granny taught me 'different from and opposite to' So that jars with me too. 'Should of' and 'could of' do it too
Mrs Frugal
Same here Clare!
Sheilaz
'Should of' and 'could of' do it too Should have in case anyone is wondering! Gallina, I couldn't join in earlier, not having had a classical education. But now I do appreciate why it was irksome. As we've moved onto English Language, I think this thread may run & run! Your fellow pedant, Sheila. PS. LSH & I actually thought about joining The Apostrophe Society, which I think had 2 members, a father & son ranting about shop fronts and other places, when the symbol is ignorantly either omitted or added. Lesley
......... when the symbol is ignorantly either omitted or added. Sheila - do you want me to add a couple of commas to this?? Me? Pedantic? nooo - anyway, I'm hopeless at apostrophes

Guest
I haven't read it but, sadly , my husband thoroughly enjoyed it. He's also read something similar by John Humphries, which again he thoroughly enjoyed. He's very hot on all this grammar stuff and particularly good at tortology.
