Willow
Hi, I have a broody Gingernut ranger that has been broody for about 23 days so far. We've tried the following - lifting her out of the nest box and not letting her back all day, - She's had a number of dunks in cold water and held their - I've put ice in a plastic bag in the nest box What else can I try, I'd hoped when none of the above worked she'd get over it after 21 days. She has become very grumpy and pecks us me and chases the cat. To add to our problem's the other hen is getting lonely and has taken to wandering off to where there are plenty of people - the builders working opposite and the local infant school so far... Not sure how she is gettign out of the garden, we thought we'd blocked up all gaps. Thanks Patricia

Christian
Have you tried a broody cage? Pm Claret for advice. (i'm sure she has used one) All the best
Cinnamon
I have used a broody cage & it works a treat. You need one of those plastic coated wire animal carriers which is open all the way around....no solid floor or roof,so air can circulate. Put it in the run on top of 4 bricks, again to help ait flow.Give her food & drink - those clip on budgie feeders are perfect, then leave her in it day & night for a couple of days. She won't be pleased & you will feel like the worse chicken mum in the world, but they soon get fed up of having no where to nest & it breaks the cycle. Good luck! lisa33
Bobbi was brooby last week. I unwillingly put her in a guinea pig cage on her own for three days. She is fine now. Hasn't started laying eggs yet but is back foraging round the garden with Rae and Cynthia and only goes in the eglu to sleep. I didn't like doing it but it worked. Willow
Thanks now I understand what a broody cage is ! I'd seen them mentioned in the forum before I had a brody hen but couldn't quite work out what it was so hadn't taken it in. I'll ask around friends to see if anyone has an appopriate style of pet carrier I can borrow. re other hen going visiting - the builders were very amused at her peckng around whilst they worked I got the impression they rather liked havign her there. They'd knocked on a few doors to see if anyone was missing a hen but they have been so u"Ooops, word censored!"trusive that many of the neighbours didn't realise we had any. Clearly I need to get another couple of hens when Primrose stops being broody so they have more company
Boris70
I shut my broodies out of the nest box for a few days - I get the burp burp noises telling me I'm nasty - but they soon snap out of. (I found the dunking didn;t work at all - they just looked silly and hated me - but it does work for some). You have to be careful about the single one on her own - appraently they can die of lonliness (that gem came from an experienced chicken keeper), and made me sna mine out of being broody ASAP! Ladylucan
I still have a broody hen, gotta be coming up for at least 6 weeks now if not longer, i have also tried everything, but to no joy, The latest thing is that i have quite a big hen called Pauline, if she see the little one go in the box she follows her in and pecks at her till she gets out!!!! the little one will then run around the outside of the pen and go in through the side door and up the ladder and waits till Pauline goes back out, then she sneaks back in. A couple of time i have looked in the next and cant see her so think she is out somewhere but when i look closer she scrunches right down so no one can see her. !! crafty moo she is...
