FAO Mrs Bertie and Puppy

Recommended Posts

Hi Laura, collecting her tomorrow morning, I'm BESIDE myself with excitement and I can't say anything as it's going to be a surprise for the children! AND OH is still grumbling, he muttered something about coming with me to collect her as he wants to see the parents - which is the LAST thing he should do as they are actually quite big. In fact the dad is VERY big (14 stone?) But anyway, have settled on the name Blossom, I've bought her bed, bowls, collar, lead and am off to buy a cage. Don't reallllly like the idea of a cage but my dog trainer friend, Crufts judge / Hoverwart specialist ie; font of all knowledge of dogs, she has 11 :shock: , recommeded it particularly as we have the children and Blossom is likely to be large. She said to think of it as a secure bed not a cage where the dog can get away from the kids and she can go if I can't be around ie if I'm in the shower and the kids are around her unsupervised. So I'm going to go and buy one now, it'll be bloomin huge! As soon as she gets here I'll be snapping away and will post some photos. Specially of one disgusted cat and frowning chickens!!:lol:

Good Luck for tomorrow Mrs Bertie, I never used to like crates i thought they were cruel, but when i first had puppies i bought one, mainly to protect them, and the girls love it, its their bit of santuary, where they can go and be promised some peace, the kids knew that if the girls were in their beds then they had to leave them alone,

I just wished i had bought one sooner,

Dont forget to post loads and loads of piccys xx

Can't wait to see pics Mrs B - they looked like gorgeous pups!

My brother used a cage for his chocolate lab puppy - must admit I wasn't keen, but it worked a treat, as you say, the pup had it's own sanctuary away from the children.

Except one day when they came to visit and brought the cage so pup could escape from my boys. Guess who ended up locking themselves in the cage? Good job social services weren't around that day - could've been quite embarrassing  Although the idea has crossed my mind occasionally since then ...

Dog crates are brilliant - Jazz loves hers, and it really is her sanctuary.

If anything happens and we need to run in a hurry - animals out loose etc. we can put Jazz in hers and know that she is safe...... and so is the house  Most of my family (including me) are not dog people but we can visit them because we take the crate with us. They are an even better idea if you have young children around.

I like Airedales too, the standard ones not the little ones. I didn't buy a cage as they hadn't got the size I think I'm going to need (BIG!) but I'vec found them on the internet and they're cheaper there too so am going to order one. My doggy friend across the road said she would lend me one whilst Blossom is little so I'll have to grit my teeth and go and ask (not very good at asking people for stuff even if they've offered - how dumb is that?) BUT, whilst I was in the pet shop I was staggered to see, not only pink leather collars with diamonte studs all the way round, but faux leather pink boots, hoodies, t-shirts, pink or black tutu's and handbags with head holes - ALL FOR DOGS!!:shock: I couldn't believe it, they even had handbags for dogs to carry in their mouths!!! I was a little tempted, but I resisted. For now! So, going to work at 9 this evening, just gotta get through that, OH is taking the kid to school so as soon as they leave I'm off to Liphook to collect me dawg!!!

A dog crate is a must - it is not cruel - it gives your woggle a nice secure home - somewhere to go to sleep and relax - and get away from the excited children

You should also check out puppy training classes - socialisation for any dog (big or small) is a must - they must get used to other dogs and other people.

Make sure your children are in on the training she may be a "little" puppy now - but think what a BIG dog she will become and how difficult it will be to deal with her when she weighs more than you.

Take Blossom out with you as much as possible - traffic / shops / public transport / countryside / farm animals etc. - the more she gets exposed to when young, the more she will take in her stride.

Most importantly of all - enjoy your dog!!!!

Blue has a pale blue diamonte collar (she's still a toughie though!) - nothing wrong with a bit of bling

My brother lives in Canada. He has some lovely outfits for his lab Dillon.

This one is for when they visit the lake (Dillon has a rather unfortunate habit of chasing boats)

This is his snow outfit:

I don't think the bootees lasted too long though. They now have to dip his paws in wax for protection!

Good Luck for tomorrow, I can't wait to hear about your new puppy's antics, and the children's reaction to their wonderful surprise.

It's definately a good idea to get a crate. Our Basset Hound (Adolescent now!!) has a pen in the corner of the hallway and it has been a blessing, especially when my little boy gets over-enthusiastic with her!! Even my OH who was very sceptical about it at first, and told everyone what a complete waste of money the pen was, now agrees how essential it is.

Speed on tomorrow!!!! :D

Crate training is fab Mrs B. It wasn't really around when I had my Lurcher Jezebel, but she had her bed in a nook under the stairs and I never intruded when she was in there - it was her place for time to herself and if she was sent there to be out fo th eway/safe, then she always stayed.

Our neighbours have a black lab, who is 2 now and beautifully trained - I love walking him and having cuddles. Well trained dogs are a joy :D

This collars WAY too big

The cat's disgusted, the hens are similarly unimpressed (much clucking and standing up very tall!) but Harrison and I AND OH are already smitten!!

More photos follow later, the girls at school have NO IDEA we've got a puppy! It's going to be chaos later.......!!

:lol::lol:
