Grandmashazzie
Can anyone offer any advice? We had 5 brown hens about 18 months, 2 older hens and 2 bantams. All stopped laying in the hot weather. They had flubenvet, red mite was discovered and appears to be gone and no eggs. So 5 new ex batts got. Happy days , 5 eggs most days. All re wormed with Marriages pellets with flubenvet. Poultry tonic in water, ACV once a month and no obvious red mite or lice. Now 1 or 2 eggs per day from 14 chickens. The feed is generic layers pellets from Jollyes or equestrian place and can’t find stockist of fancier feed and usually get hefty carriage charges to Ireland. I really don’t know what more to do. There doesn’t seem to be egg eater as checked several times a day and no stained wood shavings in nest box .Any thoughts much appreciated. The Dogmother
Mine aren't laying well this year either. Mainly due to not really eating much in the heat, then going into a moult as the hot weather ended rather abruptly. Are you sure they're not laying elsewhere? Can you get Smallholder pellets there? Mine love these.
Grandmashazzie
Def not laying else where as have been in WIR and their fenced off garden, which of course is now bare earth and deleafed trees to chicken height so an egg would be easy to spot. Patricia W
An egg is rare thing for me too. Most of mine gave up laying years ago, but the couple still deigning to produce seem to have stopped now for the winter.
Natspringy
My legbars have given up too! As they are moulting I gave extra meal worms the other day. I did notice an egg the next day. Not sure if it's a coincidence or if the extra protein helped. But our eggs from the leg bars have been a bit on and off of late. The rescues are egg machines. Grandmashazzie
‘ the rescues are egg machines ‘ that is the very reason I got new rescue girls.Which is why I am so baffled by the lack of eggs.
Patricia W
Were they laying very thin shelled ones before they stopped? I’m wondering if you are just unlucky in getting a group that are giving up laying at the same time. The rescues I’ve had do eventually stop laying. Grandmashazzie
No egg shells were grand. I have got small holders crumb just in case they have beak problems. Though beaks look fine, 3 today so hope egg production has resumed.
