Turtle
Hi Our chickens are ordered and due to arrive tomorrow . Having done our research we found out that garlic powder is a good thing to add to the chooks food to stop them smelling. We went to our local 'horsey' shop today and they had hundruds of different sorts of the stuff! Is the human grade stuff right for the chooks? Also does it make the eggs taste garlicy? Really would be pleased to know before our and arrive.
The Dogmother
It doesn't make the eggs taste garlicky. Garlic flakes are best - the powder tends to clump when it gets damp.
Omletina Kyckling
Hi, If you look in the Omlet shop they list a garlic powder in a yellow and black tub http://www.omlet.co.uk/shop/shop.php?cat=Chicken%20Extras&sub=health&product_id=134 - I bought the same product from the horse supplies place near me and I add it to their drinking water. Snowy
I have the same one, bought from the local horsey shop. I give mine a bowl of leftover s"Ooops, word censored!"s for their teatime treat and add a spoonful of the garlic powder to that.
Shirl
I have the same one too. It cost me £2.20 not £4.
The Dogmother
Mine's an enormous tub of NAF granules from a horse feed supplier, can't remember how much it cost but it can't have been much.
Jules.
I've got a massive tub for £4.20 from our local horse shop. I pop a few flakes into the water.
Olly
I just sprinkle it in amongst the pellets. I use the powder but you're right, it does go a bit lumpy if it gets damp! I don't think the human sort would be good because it tends to have salt in it (besides it would probably be really expensive). Any sort of horsey garlic should be ok. Do get some, it makes a big difference to the yuk factor!
Egluntyne
I prefer powder as I find it coats the pellets , whereas flakes get left in the bottom of the grub. Definitely not culinary garlic granules or garlic salt. Too salty and the cost would be astronomical.
arowland17
I put powder in the water - I put a teaspoon-ful in a big evian bottle, fill with water and shake it to mix it well, then add it to the glug and top up with normal water - absolutely stinks but the girls seem to love it, especially when it's fresh and really garlicy!! ktdot
I got my garlic powder from a horse feed supplier. They do their own bags and you can get it in powder, flake or granule form. It's also labelled as 'human grade'. It just means it's really good quality and I suppose if you got the urge it is also safe for us to eat! Ain't Nobody Here
I add the garlic powder to my pellets. The grub seems to keeps the rain out so I've not had a problem with it getting damp (yet). Also add a spoonful to their teatime treat!
