I have been running a dual boot machine with Ubuntu and Windows for about 6 months and realised that I very rarely use Windows now, and when I do it irrates me so much. All the annoying little pop ups; You have unused icons on your desktop; SO WHAT! Windows has detected new hardware, would you like installed? Yes please, Sorry windows can't find the drivers for your incredibly common printer, would you like to install it manually? NO, but I will, now go away. Windows has detected new hardware, would you like it installed? NO! Windows has been updated and the update requires a restart, would you like to restart now or later? Later, i'm busy. 2 mins later...... Windows has been updated and the update and requires a restart, would you like to restart now or later? Windows needs to be rebooted everytime it does anything. You have to click Start to shut down and then it asks you if you are sure you want to shut down!! Er, no I just clicked that for a laugh! Then theres the retarded paper clip in office! Looks like you are writing a suicide note would you like help with this? How would you like to kill yourself? pills? rope? Beachy Head? And you have to buy software to do stuff that windows should already do! Like burn DVD's for instance. Anyway, I am about to order a new desktop and laptop from Dell pre-installed with Ubuntu 7.04 I can't wait. Bring on the penguins! No more virus worries. Are there any more Linux fans on here? Kev. As a result all computer run linux, whether I want them to or not I can even do basic command line stuff and edit some sed and awk scripts At least my whole system doesn't clog up and need re-installing now I'm on Linux and OH claims it is unusual that open office crashes for me I like open office, anyway and have been on Firefox for ages. You can get Linux to do anything you want but on the downside if you want something very specialised (endnote, Biochem programmes) someone like OH has to fiddle with it, or you have to blankly search on the Internet to find it. Couperman Posted October 15, 2007 Author Share Posted October 15, 2007 I was first introduced to the world of linux by my Auntie who wanted a computer for nothing, not a problem as me and my bro's had enough spare parts to build one. Then she said she didn't want to pay for software, again not a problem if you don't mind breaking the law. She did! So what do you do for the girl who want's it all for free, yes Linux. So I spent hours learning a new language, ( I was comfortable with command line DOS and UNIX but that was sooooooooooo long ago) anyway I installed it on her free machine and was so impressed I put it on ours too. She has had a few probs which I have managed to sort out via Ubuntu forums, yes she expected free IT support too. I dread to think how long I would have spent trying to sort out a hooky version of XP for her. I have always paid top dollar for the Windows operating system rather then using dodgy ones. although i hated the aggro at the time my beloved aunt did me a favour. I know from experience that if Linux goes wrong you are left with a command line, which is scary to the uninitiated. But there is more help available online than you would ever get from Windows experts. The only problem I have is a replacement for AutoCad which I think I have solved with Varicad. Kev. Chochick would find more useful programs for Linux than Windows, If you want to play games Windows is the way, if you want to do serious work Linux provides software for free developed by like minded scientists. From my point of view, I just like the fact fact it works without bugging me, comes complete with software which would cost hundreds to buy on top of windows. AutoCad and Varicad are engineering drafting programs BTW. I miss drawing boards and pencils, that was artistic, having said that reminising (sp) isn't what it was. Kev. My current work machine is being replaced today because it keeps crashing, so when the IT support bod has transferred over all the data, I am going to strip this machine down, reload it and see if I cam get it to play my way Phil (being an illustrator) uses a Mac (two in fact) with twin processors, liquid cooling and fancy lights - they both look very flash, have enormous screens, but he uses a tablet and I can't get to grip awith it Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Dell told me that delivery would be the 30th, so not bad really! I haven't managed to connect to the web via wireless, I can't remember the passkey! It is a rubbish router anyway, Belkin, stay well clear they are spectacularly rubbish! It didn't work very well with Windows either. Try to download anything and it falls over. I would be really interested on what brower you are using with linux and if you are using some kind of x-windows to run everything on........ The reason I ask is that I want to run an asterisk phone system but they come with various different versions of linux and I wanted to know the easiest way of accessing the net as well.......as the computer would be a waste just using it as a phone system.......
