Cinnamon
I just had a near miss, in fact a VERY near miss with another driver who pulled out in frount of me at a junction. They were so busy using their mobile phone that they simply didn't have the time to look to see where they were going If I hadn't braked very hard,I may not be here now typing this. I am constantly astounded at how many twerps I see using their mobiles while driving. Isn't it against the law,or something? I sometimes really wish for a big loudspeaker in my car so I can yell 'IDIOT' at them
Guest
It IS against the law, but I doubt many people are stopped and fined when they are seen by the police - probably far too much paperwork involved to make it worth their while. Guest
My brain isn't in gear this morning - sorry! What really drives me mad is the drivers of big lorries chatting on their phones. A distract driver in a car is dangerous enough, never mind those giant trucks ramming into you on a roundabout.
Snowy
Still see so many people doing this - winds me up as well Cinnamon. Hope you are OK - it shakes you up doesn't it? Love the idea of a loudspeaker on the car! Oooh, I might get arrested if everyone else could hear what I shout at people from the confines of my car! Tina C
My OH got stopped and filmed by the BBC on the day the law was brought in. He was famous for a day as he appeared on all the local news bulletins (and he was driving a company car...). Funny thing is he had a hands free kid but the cable had been pullled out accidentally and lost over the weekend (by me I think ) and he was waiting for a replacement. The report ended with Mike saying 'Its a fair cop'. I think he had always wanted to say that. I HATE people who use mobile phones when driving. Its just so unnecessary. I am not a big fan of satnavs on dashboards either.
lisa33
Drivers on mobile phones really make me 'RRRRRAAARRRRRR' Esp. people with kids in their car and drivers with passengers (if it's that important let the passenger do the call!!!!) At least you are ok Cinnamon. Did they even notice you were there?? Probably not!
Cinnamon
I'm fine, but I am really angry still. She did notice me - would have been hard not to - I was pretty much on top of her bonnet Silly moo
Couperman
A colleague of mine was driving and his phone rang, he pulled over into a laybay, put the handbrake on and answered the call, only to still receive a fine from a passing bobby as his engine was still running! I don't know if his appeal was successful. I thought that although to the letter of the law the bobby was right, he was a huge prat, I mean you don't need to look to hard to find people actually driving and doing it (using the phone I mean). Kev.
lisa33
Andyman got caught last year talking on his phone, whilst driving. He was't going to tell me as he knows how much it rarrs me, but his mum grassed him up. Suffice to say he had no sympathy from me.
bronze
So glad you're ok Last year when I was in hospital dhs mum was rear-ended in the car with ds1 and dhs Gran in it. A lorry drove straight into the back of them and didn't even seem to make any attempt to stop. The car then went into the car in front, all in 5 cars were shunted dhs mums car having been pushed 17 feet with the brake on. Luckily everyone was ok though dhs mum was very sore and had a neckbrace on and Dhs Gran had a huge bruise from the seatbelt. So glad it was an estate otherwise the chances of my ds1 being here today are low. The car was written off. The lorry driver was on the phone. You can imagine how angry it makes me (he was prosecuted yay)
Cate in NZ
It's a pet hate of mine as well I have to admit, and I'm continually amazed at how many drivers I still see with a phone held to their ear . That said I rarely use my mobile, more for emergencies than anything else so I can afford to be a bit smug about it............ no-one ever rings me unexpectedly whilst I'm driving
chickencam
This law needs to be enforced more rigorously. I live on the junction of a busy main road and a busy lane and constantly see people on their mobiles. There is a crossing just down from the junction which we all use several times every day and we quite often get cars pulling out of the lane on their mobiles failing to notice the red lights and sailing through. I am always reminding the children not to cross until the traffic has actually stopped. Glad you're ok Cinnamon lucky one of you was paying attention
Egluntyne
A woman who lives just along from me killed an 80 year old Woman at a busy junction a year or so ago. She gets sentenced next month. She is looking at at least 2 years custodial. She denies it and phone records indicate that there were no calls to or from her phone at the time in question. However, witnesses confirm that she was using it. She says she dropped it. She is now trying to get a lenient sentence by waving her severely handicapped child in the judges face. She should have thought of him earlier, And she killed an old lady. The sentence should reflect that. Am glad you are OK Cinnamon.
bronze
She denies it and phone records indicate that there were no calls to or from her phone at the time in question. . I would have said that would be a major bit of evidence. Though it depends what the witnesses say she was doing. If they say she had it to her ear. Unreliable witnesses? she could have been texting though
Egluntyne
She had it to her ear. Several witnesses said so. There is speculation that she was listening to messages. She says she dropped it into the footwell, so there would seem to be some sort of admission that she was fiddling with it at least. She claims that this did not distract her. Well something did. She ploughed across a notoriously tricky junction at a busy time and hurled an 80 year old lady 40 feet, injuring her so badly that she died. Egluntyne
You've sacked the chauffeur then? You are overworking that poor girl. She'll be asking for the minimum wage if you don't watch out.
Looney
I hate drivers that use their mobiles too Spotted a car, pulled up badly outside Cambridge station the other day. The owner was smoking, chatting on mobile and trying to pull out onto the busy roundabout at the same time (anyone that knows the station will know the roundabout is a nightmare)....she then beeped her horn at the person she very nearly ran into - unbelievable!
