Buff Orpingtons need new home

Recommended Posts

3 for now, the choice is from Maran Cuivre, Coral, Rhode Star and Columbine. I think we'll go for the first three as the columbine is getting mixed reviews in a message I posted on here and on another forum. It is also a fairly new breed for Thornes so they're not too sure of its temperament. The way they were racing about their pen in contrast to the quietness of the other hybrids made me a bit nervous!

We've got a bit more preparation of the ground to do and need to locate somewhere that sells Hemcore (Frank doesn't rate it!) but will hopefully be able to pick them up this weekend

I have three Silver Nicks. They are absolutely fabulous and I love them to bits. It took two weeks to tame them and get them used to being picked up. I did this at night time when they were asleep. It does work. When they come into lay also helps because they automatically crouch down when you approach them or put your hand over their backs. My children love them. My daughter goes out to see them in the morning in her wellies and nightie. She is two.

What date is the talk?

I would like to come along and meet up too.

November 18th. Don't know the time but will have a look when I'm there at the weekend.

What types are your chooks? They look a lot like the ones I hope to get!!

Jo

Bobbi (the white one) is a memblesham amber

Rae (the orange one) is a light sussex x rhode island red

Cynthia (the black one) is a fenning black.

Bobbi is definately the most handleable.

She will let me give her cuddles for ages. :D

I didn't get my girls from Thornes as I wanted them the first week of April as I had a week off work and I wanted to settle them in. Thornes didn't have any available till the end of April

Instead I got them from Slip End Wildfowl Park.

I get the mash, grit and wheat scratch from Thornes and I get my Hemcore from Cecil Sale in Sandon nr Buntingford

One of our 3 is a Rhode Star and she is great - chatters away to me when she's out with me in the garden. She's also the one who makes the most noise trying to get my attention if I walk past their run without letting them out!!! She's also really inquisitive, and she's the only one I can pick up although she seems to tolerate it rather than enjoy it....... :( (She's usually just dying to get back to foraging!!!)

BTW I would have loved a buff orpington but the eglu ain't big enough - we were originally going to get buffies, but the omlet people told us the eglu was really only big enough for 2 of them....and also when I found out they don't lay as many eggs, I didn't want the situation of having to go to the supermarket to buy eggs when I had my own chickens!! So we opted (this time round anyway!!!) for 3 hybrids........

if your still having trouble rehoming i'll take them i have plenty of room and i live in letchworth :D

Cor - loads of local chicken people - I've got my name down on Thornes list for some pure breeds - hopefully ready any day now! One of the reasons we moved here was the local chicken nursery - I can't think of a better way to spend a saturday afternoon (however DH thinks otherwise)!

I sent Andyman in on the way home today.

The talk is on November 18th at 2pm. It would be great to meet up with some Hertfordshire / Bedfordshire omleteers there.

I used to look after a buff orpington at the farm and he was gorgeous, definitely my favourite. Im so excited to be getting my own :D

Orps really are the business. Mine are great. They are good tempered, lovely to look at, their feathers are all loose and riffle about when they run. The only thing mine won't do is eat out of my hand - which the Maran, North Holland blue and Evil Georgie (elderly Pepperpot) will do.

My buff sussex are even more nervous!

I'd been keeping herro and the buffs seperate because i tried to introduce them and they just started attacking eachother straight away but today herro escaped from her pen whilst i was at college and when i found her they were all free ranging quite happily together and have become firm friends. :D im so happy it worked out well. im gonna see if they want to sleep together tonight also

so here are some pics of them free ranging.

Sorry about this - having seen the piccies of your lovely hens, I just had to post some pictures of my Orps taken today. They aren't nice and buff coloured like yours, but I just adore Orpingtons - they really are fantastic.

Mine are getting a lot darker around the neck and collar - especially Trinny and Arrietty. Its happened over the past week or so (they are around 25 weeks old).

Suzannah; can you believe a hen that big can get up in a tree?
