puffball
On the radio this morning I heard that bird flu is in Sussex (sorry it IS Suffolk ) (hopefully, to anyone that lives there, your ladies are alright). I live in Essex and I was wondering what the risk is of my girls getting it? Do I need to put them undercover? And if they do get it, how do you know? Do they definitely have to be culled? Can people catch it? I really hope none of your chickens get ill I'm sorry for asking so many questions but hopefully other people will want to know as well... Snowy
I've not seen the news about sussex, only suffolk. They reckon it is passed on in the faeces, saliva and secretions of wild birds(although I think it is mainly ducks and geeses rather than garden birds). The advice is to cover your hens run to prevent access by wild birds and their droppings. Have a look at the thread in the Nesting Box - there's a bit more info there. little chickadee
DEFRA has set up a restiriction zone for the whole of Suffolk (not Sussex) and most of Norfolk. A wider Restricted Zone has been established in addition to the controls put in place earlier today; the new Restricted Zone covers much of Norfolk and the whole of Suffolk The new Restricted Zone requires the isolation of poultry from wild birds. Movements within this zone can take place, but movements are not permitted out of the new zone at present. We expect to make available general licences for low risk movements out of the zone shortly. raffik
Oh dear. I did hear this on the news this morning, not good What would this mean for an Eglu owner in Norfolk with chooks?
Snowy
Don't worry, a covered eglu run (ie the winter shade or a shower curtain) will be fine. You might not be able to let them free range until restrictions are lifted and don't take them to bed with you, that way there's no risk to you or yours. puffball
Sorry it is Suffolk I changed my post (this morning I was rushing for school so that is the reason...Honest!) Covering their run is alot easier said than done. Part of their run is a greenhouse, do you think that they would be okay in there? It might get a bit cold in the winter though... bronze
Its near Diss so very close to the border. We're in the exclusion zone.
peanut12
we're in great leighs too Puffball. We only have the standard shade (covering part of the run) Should we cover the whole run to prevent any droppings entering the run??? adeandsu
Hi all There is a 'sticky' post here: http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1533 It gives all the information you need on how to keep your chickens 'indoors' (confined to their run with either the winter shade or a shower curtain!) Richard
Its near Diss so very close to the border. We're in the exclusion zone. I think we're just outside the zone. My girls' run isn't covered so I've got plans to convert the greenhouse into a chicken run if necessary!

You say you're in Great Leigh's too; do you own the post office by any chance? Well if not it's nice to find out I have neighbors with chickens!
