raffik
The weather has turned a bit wet and cold here, but Belina has been out and about free ranging without a care in the world. However, I feel a bit guilty and worried that she'll become cold and then unwell. Is it best to keep her in the Eglu when it's really coming down or just let her free range with the door to the run open (which it always is, so she can get to her food and water)? Or am I worrying too much? Also, I noticed a really sweet thing Belina does. If I run from one end of the garden to the other, Belina will actually run after me. I am sure she thinks it's a game, it's really sweet though!
Egluntyne
She'll be fine. Mine love playing out in the rain and haven't come to any harm yet.
The Dogmother
Mi ne do too Egluntine, but I noticed that they were sheltering in the run in that vicious rain we had yesterday. Raffik, try putting a clear shower curtain cover over the run - then it will stay dry and offer your hens some shelter in the bad weather. raffik
The shower curtain sounds like a good idea. I am toying with ordering the alternative Eglu run cover- does anyone know if this is good for keeping the rain out? It doesn't appear to reach the ground like the original run cover, so I'd be keen to hear if it keeps the Grub dry?
The Dogmother
It's better as a shade in the summer than to keep the rain out. If you get a clear shower curtian, then they will get more daylight, but it will keep the wind and rain out. I used some plastic eyelets from Millets and bungee hooks from B&Q to attach it. chelsea
my lot absolutely hate the rain, they've been let out to free range today and spent most of the day sheltering under the caravan! (its been raining here for 3 days )
SueSteve
Mine look drowned in the rain. I kept them in on Sunday, but have let them out just for a short time the past 2 days. They look really skinny when they are wet with all their feathers flattened!! The run is starting to become a bit of a sticky muddy quagmire as well, so I am thinking about putting some slabs down under half of it. welsh sarah
hi mine dont seem to mind the rain they have been out free ranging all day, they have plenty of places to keep dry but when i went out just now to see if they had put themselves to bed they were both wet and quite happy sarah
Ain't Nobody Here
My run is getting like a quagmire too & that's with covers over it. I feel sorry for them being almost in the dark with the Omlet covers though, so I've just bought a couple of metres of clear plastic and some eyelet thingies from Dunelm Mill (advice from someone on here!) so at least they'll get some daylight. Chicken Licken
My run is sporting a £5 shower curtain from Tesco. Mostly clear with Green and Blue circles that match the eglu (this was purely coincidence!!) The girlies were all tucked up in bed by the time I made it home but my neighbour said they had not been too interested in the outside world today. Carol U
Ikea do clear plastic shower curtains for 85p. I tuck one end under the Omlet shade and attach the other to the house with bungees. However, my hens much prefer to be out in the rain to being in their nice dry run! They don't seem to notice the wet and cold and only go in at night - emerging next morning all dry and fluffy again. Doesn't seem to have done them any harm so far.
superjules
I've got the winter cover, it's not actually waterproof. I think the el-cheapo shower curtain is definately the way to go. My chooks don't seem to notice the rain up to a point, then when they've had enough they go and shelter in the greenhouse or under the garden table. Bless them! AJuff
http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=15967 I was so impressed by this I bought one too. It's fabulous, matches the eglu and works a treat.
The Dogmother
The weather was so dire this summer that I hardly had the shower curtain cover off - and being clear it lets in more daylight too - can't have my girls getting SAD now can we?
