AnnieW
someone has even posted the full Scottish and English versions of 'To a Haggis' over on River Cottage Hi Louise - can you tell me where on River Cottage to find it - or put a link. I have to perform at a Burns night on Saturday and am looking for any ideas that don't involve a scottish accent - acting is not my strong point! Louise
http://forum.rivercottage.net/viewtopic.php?t=13677 Hopefully that will take you straight to it Annie. Are you doing the poem or are you replying to the toast to the lassies??!!
thehallfamily
Happy Birthday Buffie! Its mine too today and my Grans!! We always have a haggis, though the kids are less than enthusiastic! Sainsburys had two for £2 so we are trying a veggie one! I would love to go to Scotland for my birthday ..maybe next year as it is the big 40! Anyway according to my Mum she had a Scottish Midewife (in deepest darkest Lincolnshire!) and she was all set to deliver a wee laddie for Burns Night... but they got me! SarahJo
SNAP Louise .. I was going to post re. Burns Night too .. you beat me to it. . We are having Haggis, Neeps and Tatties for dinner, and a toast with some wine ( I hate Whiskey ). Have just finished preparing the veg, and the timorous Beast is awaiting the pot, in the fridge as I type (all the way from AUCHTERARDER ). Another good site ... www.rabbie-burns.com Happy Haggis eating .....and Happy Birthday to all who have today.

AnnieW
Thanks Louise - have found it and copied it. Sarah Jo's site is also useful. The invitation for the evening said - "Yae'll hae tae learn a wee bit o' a Burns' poem or sang, as yea'll be askit tae dae yer paert" Help - any suggestions - bearing in mind I couldn't do a scottish accent to save my life! SarahJo
Annie ... the best way to read Burns is "as it is written" don't try and decipher it, or you will totally scupper youself
Louise
Good advice there Sarah I used to do a great 'To a mouse' Wee Sleekit (something) timorous beastie auch what a panics in thy breastie or something like that That definitely is my favourite and quite a short one as well I won't be having neeps as I can't bear them and no whisky but I do have a rather nice Orkney Gin to wash it down just not too much on a school night

SarahJo
Glad to be of service . I had Haggis for the 1st time, when I moved to Scotland (age 11) and unfortunately, had a horrible greasy thing . I now like Haggis ... and get a really good one sent with my pre-christmas order of Butcher goodies, from Auchterarder (Perthshire). Ben and Joe like the Tatties .... and we will see if they like Haggis, as a wee taster. They have football after school and Graham has taken them to McDonalds (ok ...... its only once a month, or less ... I am still a good Mummy!!!!!!!) . Whats Orkney Gin Louise ... can you liken the taste to something I may have had May have to get some ......
Louise
It is made by a company called Blackwoods I think you can get it in Sainsburys it is a little more expensive than standard gin but not extortionately so I think it was 13.99 for 70cl. I tried it for the first time last summer they had a stand at the highland show it is very smooth and it can be drunk without a mixer almsot a lemony taste to it. They make a vodka as well but I am not keen on vodka so I didn't try that one I was working as well didn't want to get sozzled If you like gin definately try it having said that I was so tired last night I just couldn't face gin so i had my haggis and tatties and beans with a couple of glasses of wine followed by bed Hope all of you that did the burns night thing had a good one

Louise
Sorry Shona but I can't bear them They are okay hidden in soups and stews but not on their own My mun even used to sneakily mix them mashed in with potatoes and I can't eat that either They are fine eaten raw but once cooked they have a very distinctive taste that I just can't get used to Am I barred from the forum now
