Lesley
And delicious I'm finding it all a bit difficult at times - after being Veggie. for 25 years Goat meat is only good for curry isn't it?
theherd123
WOW Lesley veggie for 25 years and not now. Can i ask what happened?! Why did you go veggie in the first place? Was it a bacon buttie that tempted you back? Ive been veggie since i was 'allowed by my parents' at 16 and never looked back, i was never kean on eating meat. It must be a HUGE battle, i couldn't look after animals and then send them to their maker.
Lesley
I stopped eating meat around 27 years ago - not because I didn't like meat but because I didn't agree with farming practise at the time. I wa s a single parent with two little ones and couldn't afford anything decent instead and along with other reasons which I'd been considering, it made sense to stop eating meat and fish altogether. Two years ago, I started to look for better meat for Carl - I wasn't happy with buying what the supermarkets were calling Organic and Free Range. The more we looked into it and found local suppliers of traditionally reared meat, the more I realised that I would be happy to eat meat as long as I knew where it had come from and how it had been reared. We had started with 2 laying chickens (didn't we all? ) and had increased them until we had 8. Then we took the next step of buying some 4 week old chickens to fatten up and eventually despatch (see my thread "Chickens for eating - not for the squeamish") As you know - we have now gone even further and have pigs as well. I'm not overly sentimental about animals but would never harm any animal nor condone any cruel or unnecessary practises. I'm still veggie. when I'm out and really only eat meat at home because I know its provenance.
theherd123
Thats really interesting and another one of the reasons i stopped eating meat too - the mass farming and ill treatment of animals. When you originally went veggie did your kiddies go veggie too? I can see that im going to have a major battle with my parents if we decide to have kids as they are real northern 'meat & two veg' people but we would bring them up as vegetarians. I must say that im a very sentimental person and just couldnt do what you are doing as it would break my heart but i think its great that at last you can live by your chosen principles of giving them a good life before their time is up. Martin B
I'd just like to make a comment about education of food. I was never aware of the poor treatment of animals in farming until I was researching all about pet chickens. It makes me think, why on earth do young people like myself not have the priviledge to learn about where are food comes from! It's a disgrace. However last week, (three weeks from end of year 9) we did a little bit about battery chickens and intensive pig farming. When I say a bit I mean 1 lesson! theherd123
Unfortunately Martin thats the National Curriculum for you. If when you choose your options you go for Food Techonolgy you will probably look at this further. Alternatively you could suggest it as a topic to debate in PSHE lessons instead. Lesley
Yes, they are pets They are mini Rex bunnies. I've always wanted rabbits which are wild rabbit colour - Agouti - and these are very close. We told Lauren and Jake that they could have a rabbit when we moved. They can share them with me. They are in a Mark 1 Eglu with the roosting bars removed - they seem quite happy. theherd123
Well done Lesley and a good choice - just that little bit cuter than sheep! Another disadvantage to sheep is that they dont fit in an eglu!
